Clean country is our goal

Clean country is our goal

Everyone dreams of a clean country. In an effort to keep the country clean, World cleanup Day is observed on the third Saturday of September every year.

This year it will observed on 19th September worldwide. It is initiated by Estonian organization Let's Do It! World. The main objective of this day is to make people aware of the importance of dumping garbage in certain places without littering, and to inform people about the problems caused due to garbage, including the problem of marine debris. It is a custom to throw garbage in a certain place, this practice works to create an urge to build this habit among all. World Cleanup Day is celebrated with litter cleanup and waste mapping activities spanning every time zone. Environmental cleanup events are held in nearly every country until concluding near the International Date Line in Hawaii and American Samoa.

In modern countries, a few cities are known as clean cities. Where there is no dirt, on street waste, dust, and smoke, there is pure air. Some of these cities are Copenhagen (Denmark), Adelaide (Australia), Wellington (New Zealand), Helsinki (Finland), Ottawa (Canada), Honolulu (Hawaii), Calgary (Canada) and Chandigarh (India). We also need to build our country as a clean country. This is possible only by creating awareness among the people through various activities. City corporations and municipalities work in different cities of the country every night from dawn to dusk but failed to give us a clean city.

According to the World Bank, 6,000 metric tons of waste are beings generated in Dhaka every day. Of this, 50 to 60 per cent is dumped properly, 20 per cent is recycled by government and non-government agencies. The rest is scattered locally. Mosquitoes and flies nest in the scattered garbage. Mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water. As a result, there is an outbreak of mosquito-borne diseases all around. Currently, the people of the city are suffering from dengue scare along with the coronavirus epidemic.

It is not possible to get rid of the disease just by spraying mosquito repellent, it is necessary to throw the garbage in a certain place without throwing garbage here and there. In our country, people eat ice crime, nuts, chips, biscuits, chocolate or many other things while walking on the streets. As soon as the meal is over, they throw the leftovers or shells or packets on the street without any hesitation. Many are seen playing street football with a bottle after drinking soft drinks or water and then leaving it at a designated place.

Dustbins can be found on the side of the road in the big cities of the country, yet people do not use them. Dhaka North and South City Corporation has provided some dustbins for dumping garbage at various points. People do not use those bins properly. Again many are seen throwing dirt from the roof of the house. The stench spreads from the dirt on the side of the road. Many people throw the empty bottle from their running cars.

Due to the coronavirus situation, the amount of one time plastic waste used in Bangladesh has increased at an alarming rate. According to the Environment and Social Development Organization (ESDO), between March 26 and April 25, 14,500 tons of hazardous plastic waste has been generated in Dhaka. Most of these products are surgical masks, polythene hand gloves, surgical hand gloves, polythene bags and hand sanitizer bottles. If these wastes are not brought under proper management, there are more health risks alongside of Covid-19 pandemic. So there is no other way except proper waste management option to protect the environment and people. Covid-19 showed us the results of not considering the environment. We should learn from the pandemic and correct us and stop polluting environment and make a plan for sustainable development now.

Various organizations have been carrying out awareness programmes to ensure that every citizen of the country uses the dustbin to dispose of garbage in a designated place without littering. It is not possible for a single person or an organization to keep the country clean. It requires collective concentration and efforts from individual personal, social initiative and national contribution. Many voluntary organizations, big and small, work to clean up the country. Not only will the country be clean in their work, every citizen has to work with it. If every person keeps their neighborhood clean and tidy from their own place, then it is possible to build a new clean Bangladesh.
