Robotic automation of footwear industry is must: Speakers

Speakers at a workshop have stressed on immediate robotic automation of the footwear industry to reduce the cost of production and help compete in the international market.

The average overhead cost of a finished product must have to be brought down below $75 cent by introducing robots in the footwear industry against the present $1.5 dollar to compete in the international market, they told a workshop on the proposed National Robotic Strategy (NRS) held on Thursday last using ‘Zoom’ online, a press release said here today.

The leveraging ICT for growth, employment and governance (LICT) project of the IT-ITES Industry of Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) under Information and mmunication Technology (ICT) division organized the workshop to incorporate recommendations of the footwear industry leaders on the NRS.

Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of North South University (NSU) Dr M Rokonuzzaman presented a power point describing the objectives of the National Robotic Strategy.

Rezaul Karim called for providing recommendations on both negative and positive aspect of introducing robots in the factories for making an effective NRS.

Bangladesh will have to produce quality products with less production cost for sustaining in the competitive international market, he said.

Shanewaz said Bangladesh can reduce production cost of leather goods to below $75 cent by introducing robots in the footwear factories.

If it can’t do it the country would lag behind in the competitive international market, he added.

Saiful Islam laid emphasis on expert intervention for introducing robots in the footwear industry and said the engagement of the experts are required to find out the areas where robotic automation is required.

Urging the government to help provide reskilling and upskilling the workers of the leather sector, Kazi Roushan Ara said tech-phobia is the main impediment on the way to automation in the sector.
