Family of Aklima Khatun, who is one of the members of national Under-15 women football team, fell victim to the dreadful cyclone Amphan which left a trail of devastation in Bagerhat and Satkhira districts.

The powerful Amphan hit the coastal areas of Bangladesh and India, killing almost 100 people and damaging thousands of houses.

Golam Rabbani Chhoton, head coach the national women’s football team, who maintained regular communications since the forecast of the Amphan landfall and after that informed about the condition of Aklima.

Chhoton, when talking to The Independent on Thursday, said, “Last night at about 12AM the strong storm tore off the corrugated-iron roof of their house. But they could manage to go to safe place at daylight, when last time I talked to her yesterday (Wednesday) then the speed of the tempest was rapidly increasing and I told her to leave the house to go for cyclone shelter.”

“Aklima, along with her family could manage to go to the cyclone shelter before suffering any sort of physical wounds; till now I have contacts with all the players, who can maintain. Most of the players of cyclone-affected areas can’t connect as storm snapped power lines, leaving most of the communication towers razed.

Chhoton also informed that the Bangladesh Football Federation is also close touch with him to know about their conditions, while Zakir Hossain Chowdhury, one of the BFF EC members, has already donated Tk10,000 for Aklima family and will provide more support.

Apart from Aklima, the other women footballers, Masura, Ankhi Khatun, Pranti, Rupa Akter Razia, Unnuti Khatun and the women team’s captain Sabina Khatun, who hails from different areas of Satkhira and Bagerhat.
