Bangladesh chairs regional aviation meet over COVID-19

Bangladesh today chaired a virtual regional meeting attended by aviation authorities of 23 countries in the region and discussed over the challenges of the aviation industry in post COVID-19 pandemic period.

Asia Pacific Regional Office of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in Bangkok organized the meeting under its CAPSCA (Collaborative Arrangement for Prevention and Management of Public Health Events in Civil Aviation).

Civil Aviation Authority, Bangladesh (CAAB) chairman Air Vice Marshal M Mofidur Rahman presided over the meeting as the current chair of CAPSCA.

Earlier, Rahman was made chairman of CAPSCA for next three years.

During the meeting, Rahman described measures taken by the Bangladesh government under the able leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina responding to challenges of COVID-19 pandemic that pushed the global economy towards its worst downturn since the Great Depression.

He also described various measures taken by the CAAB at the country’s all airports as well as its efforts in preparing a health instruction guideline for the airlines for operating flights after lifting of current flight suspension.

Rahman also urged all civil aviation authorities of countries in the region to take collective measures for overcoming the challenges of the pandemic that put the global aviation sector into a dire consequence.

ICAO’s Asia Pacific regional director Arun Mishra gave the welcome speech from Bangkok while head of aviation medicine section and CAPSCA global manager Dr Ansa Jordan joined CAPSCA and described the ICAO’s ‘Public Health Corridor Concept’.

Besides, China, Japan, Singapore and South Korea described various measures taken in the aviation sectors of their respective countries in the wake coronavirus outbreak. High officials of the CAAB also joined the video conference.
