Tonmoy tears up 23-year tie with Vikings

Tonmoy Tansen, a founder member and vocalist of popular Bangladeshi rock band Vikings, recently left the band tearing up its emotional relationship of 23 years.

Vikings confirmed it through a post on its verified Facebook page on Tuesday, saying Tonmoy severed the tie with the band to concentrate more on his career. The vocalist, however, indicated otherwise. 

“With a heavy heart we are to inform you that we had to let go Tonmoy, one of the founder member and vocal of Vikings, to focus on his own career.”

“It has been a wonderful journey of 23 years together and we wish him all the best for his new one. He'll always remain as a member of the family,” reads the FB post of the popular band. 

Tonmoy, who had remained with the band from its inception since 1997, however, said growing deficiency in mutual understanding among the band members ultimately led him to walk away, according to media reports.

Adamant about starting a new chapter within the music world, he said, “Many (members) in the band (Vikings) think that it has come across a long way. But I think that the struggle of the band has just begun. As I have the mentality to fight back, I have left the band.”

“I believe in bandism. I shall be must in band music though I have not got prepared yet. Actually, I am a bit tired …tired after taking care of Vikings over the last many years. If I survive this pandemic (coronavirus), I’ll do music independently,” Tonmoy said while revealing his thought of forming a new band in his own style. 

Vikings was named as the best band in ‘Star Search’ competition in 1999, just two years into the start of its journey back in 1997. The band released its maiden album titled ‘Jiboner Kolahol’ in 2000 while a Valentine’s Day-special album titled ‘Bhalobasi Jare’ in 2001. 

The country’s band music witnessed a pause in the activities of Vikings for over 10 years after its keyboardist Babu had left the country for abroad. During this period of inactiveness, Tonmoy was making headlines for directing tele-drama and film. After about 11 years, Vikings staged a comeback to the music scene through the film titled ‘Run Out’ directed by Tanmoy.   

Interestingly, five years back, the band made an announcement to reinstate its old line-up with Tonmoy Tansen supposed to be in vocal, Setu in lead guitar, Johny in bass, Babu in keyboard and Saymon in drums. Sad but true, the band has fallen apart before its long-cherished dream came into reality.
