PATA’s Bangladesh chapter seeks govt support

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
PATA’s Bangladesh chapter seeks govt support

The travel and tourism industry is facing one of the most critical periods during COVID -19 pandemic, the Pacific Asia Travel Association's (Pata) Bangladesh chapter said in a press statement on Saturday.

More than three lakh tourism workers in the country may lose their jobs by June this year due to the coronavirus situation, the statement added.

In Bangladesh, about 10 million domestic tourists travel and annual turnover is around 250 billion.  Industry insiders fear hundreds of travel and tour companies will close, a significant number of small hotel motel, resorts, restaurant will shut down, thousands of people will be jobless just after COVID -19 effect.

PATA’s Bangladesh chapter has sought government support in the immediate aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic to save the industry, the statement added.

UNWTO has revised its 2020 prospects for international tourist arrivals to a negative growth 1 per cent to 3 per cent, translating into an estimated loss of $30 to $50 billion in international tourism receipts.

Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, UNWTO predicted a positive growth of 3 per cent to 4 per cent for this year.  The prospects look glimmer as the battle against COVID-19 continues and experts predict a long recovery time.
