Death is inevitable but now a large number of people are thinking death is imminent. This fear is everywhere and it has affected from the king to common people. My age is nearly 90 and my physician has quarantined me for four months and he does not know whether it will have to be extended further. Everyday I am getting news of hundreds of deaths in almost all the countries. It seems that we are living in the valley of death. Personally it is a wonder that I am still alive. Some people who I used to think my arch enemies are also making phone calls to inquire after my health. In this condition I was searching for a subject suitable for my weekly column in The Independent. I was searching different newspapers for a subject when a friend called me. He asked me what I was doing. I replied that I was searching for a subject for my column. He asked me in surprise “Why can’t you find a subject? You are now surrounded by death and every mortal being are afraid of it.They are not finding any hope for survival and suffering from fear and despair. Fear of death is now in every house and it is more dangerous than the virus. Our writers and journalists have a duty to give people hope and confidence. During the Second World War Romain Rolland wrote his famous bookI will not rest which kindled hope and aspiration in Europe. Now every writer and journalist should rise above the present deadly situation and give people hope and courage”.
My friend’s utterances gave me hope and assuaged my fear of death. So long I was thinking that Malthus’ theory is hundred percent correct. According to this theory when the world is overpopulated and its environment becomes polluted nature comes to fulfill its duty to reduce the number of people and clean the environment. Covid-19iscurrently performing this duty and has taken the job to reduce the number of people from this overpopulated world. If this death toll continues for the next few months very soon the world will be depopulated. Now we are campaigning for birth control but in future we might have to encourage more birth. One psychologist says that with hope even a dying man can save himself. It is possible for a man with hope and courage to save himself from a stormy, turbulent river even if he does not know how to swim. But in a similar situation despite knowing how to swim a man without hope would not be able to save himself. It is now every creative and thinking man’s duty to fight against fear which is associated with this disease. There is also a lot of rumour going around surrounding this COVID-19 which is spreading more fear in public mind.

Now a days scientists have succeeded to land on moon and discovered the possibility of living in Mars. In the present condition of the earth people would have liked to migrate to moon or Mars. In our early youth we watched the Superman series, where a wise man came to realize that his planet will be destroyed very soon. He warned its inhabitants and advised them to migrate from this planet to a different one. Nobody believed him and ridiculed him. Then he packed his child in a box and travelled for three weeks in the space. The boy landed on earth and eventually became superman.If this story was true then all human kind would have liked to migrate from earth to another planet. If not all, at least President Trump, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other western leaders would have migrated there and lived in a retreat full of joy. But it is not possible. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has taken ill with this virus. President Trump’s country is also severely affected by corona. A report has come to light and spread in the social media, though I do not know if it is true, that last December China informed some of the western countries and America about the breakout of this virus.According to this rumourPresident Trump (perhaps, Boris Johnson also) ignored this report. They thought that this virus would bring death and destruction only in China and Beijing’s economic and military powers will be destroyed. This western hope did not come true. Now both America and Britain are heavily affected by this virus. Boris Johnson and Prince Charles have fallen victim to this virusand President Trump who used to threaten to destroy Iran or North Korea daily has apparently lost his voice. All the war in Iraq and Afghanistan have stopped automatically.American soldiers abroad are clamoring to come back to their homeland. Pentagon is facing problem trying to raise their morals.

Another report, unconfirmed, said that after the breakout of corona virus America wanted to send their experts to Wuhan to cooperate with Chinese scientists to discover its preventive, but China avoided it silently. Their fear is that America will enter China under the excuse of helping Beijing but will create trouble for the communist regime. They did the same thing with Soviet Union. When there was an explosion in the atomic center in Chernobyl, America was the first country to offer help to Russia to come out from this destruction. But what they actually did was an attempt to dislodge the communist leadership in the country and to set up a puppet regime under Yeltsin. Soviet Union collapsed soon after. After First World War western powers defeated the Ottoman Empire and divided it into several states under their domain. Similarly although the Soviet Union was victorious in the Second World War, the western powers divided it. China took lesson not only from Russia but also from their own Tiananmen conspiracy when western powers helped their chosen people to revolt against the regime. Whether this report is true or not nobody can say. But from the past history one can draw his own conclusions.

Now there is rumour about Bangladesh also. Many people say that the government is not successful in confronting COVID-19. The number of deaths are suppressed and the precautionary arrangements in the hospitals are not sufficient. The kits and instruments to detect this disease are not available everywhere. I do not believe this report fully.I have been watching Bangladesh television regularly like Channel-i, Shomoy TV etc. On Thursday morning I saw in one channel that the military was controlling the traffic. In Rangpur at one health center there was only one health worker but no patients. I have been gathering news from other sources in Dhaka also. It seems that government is doing their best but it is not possible for government alone to do everything without people’s cooperation and assistance from all political parties and associations. When powers like America, China are still struggling and facing extreme difficulty to tackle this virus, we cannot expect Bangladesh with its huge population, limited resources, and lack of health consciousness among many people to tackle it quickly. Our civil society are silent and inactive in this situation. They should come out and extend their helping hand to government to fight this demon.  I agree with my friend that fear is more dangerous than the virus and rumours are fuelling this fear. This is a time when all our people should unite and fight against this enemy of the humanity. Government should also get proper help from people.

I agree with my friends in Dhaka on one point though. Our health ministry is corrupt and inefficient. Some unscrupulous doctors are taking advantage of the situation and are engaged in corrupt practices making profit on human lives. Only by enacting law this cannot be stopped. People concerned should detect such malpractices and report it to the press and government. The press also has a vital duty to investigate corrupt practices among doctors and the health department. If one newspaper could bring down the mighty presidency of Nixon why cannot our newspapers engage in investigationsabout the malpractices throughout the country and in our health sector? Corruption is going on in many hospitals. Our health ministry has to stop it now and make themselves accountable to the people. This is not a simple crisis that we are facing at present. It is a crisis for both human kind and human civilization. We must face it with unity, courage, faith and determination. From its birth sciencehas been fighting cruel nature. It has always won the war. This time also it will win. We only require faith, courage and hopefor humanity to defeat their fear.By actingunitedly and with determination we can combat this deadly enemy.
