Tk 11.24cr, rice allocated for temporary jobless

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT, Dhaka
Tk 11.24cr, rice allocated for temporary jobless

The government has allocated Tk. 11.24 crore and 39,667 tonnes of rice as humanitarian assistance for poor people of 64 districts. These people have become temporarily jobless because of the government’s stay-at-home directive to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The disaster management and relief ministry has allocated the cash and rice as per the demand of deputy commissioners (DCs) across the country.

According to sources in the ministry, the district administrators will be able to distribute the money and rice as relief in the coronavirus situation, including assisting poor people. Many day labourers, rickshaw-pullers, street vendors, van drivers, bus, truck and various transport drivers have become unemployed as the government has advised people not to go out from their homes during the government’s declared holidays.

The director of the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control And Research (IEDCR), Dr Meerjady Sabrina Flora, confirmed that 51 people have been detected with COVID-19 infection in Bangladesh and six more patients have recovered from the deadly virus, taking the number of recovered people to 25.

“The government has decided to help provide rice and cash during the emergency period as per the Prime Minister’s instructions. Besides, DCs in every district have been asked to prepare a list of such people,” state minister for disaster management and relief, Dr Enamur Rahman, told this correspondent yesterday (Tuesday).

He also said they have already allocated Tk. 11,24,72,264 and 39,667 tonnes of rice additionally to help poor people both in Dhaka metropolitan areas and towns in 64 districts.

The DCs have been asked to distribute the money and rice among the unemployed people, maintaining transparency so that no one would go without food, he added.

“We are monitoring the distribution activities of the DCs. They have been asked to distribute relief materials by maintaining coordination among local NGOs and other organisations that are also helping these people, so that no one receives relief materials twice,” said the state minister.

The COVID-19 pandemic

is a global crisis, he said, adding that the government has enough food stock and nobody will suffer from a shortage of food. Rahman said more rice and money, if needed, will be allocated as per the demand of the local administration.

All officers and employees of various departments under the disaster management and relief ministry have been working across the country, even during the holidays to serve the people.

The government on Saturday directed the authorities concerned to provide food aid to the daily wage-earners by preparing a list of those suffering from food shortage being jobless due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis. The ministry also called on the affluent section of the society, aid groups, and NGOs to provide aid to the poor in rural level.
