Ex-cricketers to donate money and essentials

Buoyed by the initiative taken by the current players, former cricketers of Bangladesh are mulling over a proposal to build a platform to help the distressed during the lockdown to contain the spread of the coronavirus not only in the capital but throughout the country.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director Akram Khan confirmed the news of their initiative for the coronavirus-hit people to The Independent over mobile phone yesterday.

Earlier, the current cricketers—led by Bangladesh one-day captain Tamim Iqbal Khan—donated half of their current month’s salaries to the government’s coronavirus prevention fund recently.

Khan, who is also a former captain of the national team, said they would help those who become unemployed and are suffering on account of the lockdown imposed by the government to curb the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

“You all know that the cricketers of the national team have donated financial assistance for the government’s coronavirus prevention fund. We, the former national cricketers and captains, are thinking of doing something for the distressed people in this moment of crisis,” said Khan, who is also the chairman of the BCB cricket operations committee.  “The situation has become such that we have become cut off from all. I’m trying to communicate with those who are financially well-off and will attempt to bring them all on a single platform so that we can all help the people who are distressed at the time of the coronavirus pandemic,” Khan told this reporter.

“We will start work on the initiative within the next one or two days. We will first form a fund wherein the ex-cricketers will give our donations as per our abilities,” he added.

Khan, who still remains popular in the country, said they will help the people who are undergoing treatment for the coronavirus and are currently in need of financial aid.

He also said they would help the poor with cash and daily essentials. “First, we will collect money for the fund to help the people as per their needs. It may be spent on those who have been affected by the contagious life-threatening COVID-19 virus. Again, we’ll try to stay beside those families who are in need in the current situation of unemployment,” he said.

It will not be an effort of the Cricket Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB). “The former captain and cricketers will do it personally,” explained Khan.

“No, it’ll not be done through the CAWB. I’m trying to do it with the help of the former captains and players,” he confirmed.

“We want to work with those who are financially well-off. There are Faruque (Ahmed) bhai, Nannu bhai (Minhajul Abedin), Durjoy (Naimur Rahman), Sujon (Khaled Mahmud), Sumon (Habibul Bashar), Pilot (Khaled Mashud), Gullu (Javed Omar Balim). I’ve started communicating with them all,” he further said.

Akram has requested all well-off people of the country to stand beside the distressed people from their respective positions. He also reminded them not to forget the suggestions to prevent the dreaded coronavirus and follow the advice every time.

“This is a small effort on our part. But I will request all to stay beside others from their respective positions. Unity can change all. My humble request to all the people of the country is to pray to Allah and stay at home to stem the deadly coronavirus,” he said.
