Awami League plans campaign to combat coronavirus

Awami League plans campaign to combat coronavirus

The ruling Awami League (AL) has chalked out plans to conduct an awareness build-up campaign across the country against the outbreak of novel coronavirus, known as COVID -19, said party insiders.

However, the party has not yet fixed the date for the formal launch of the awareness campaign.

The party has called a meeting of its highest policy-making body, the Awami League Central Working Committee, to be held today (Monday) at party president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s official residence Gono Bhaban in the capital.

Party insiders said the AL top brass will issue necessary directives to the party’s central leaders about the precautionary measures on novel coronavirus from Monday’s meeting. Echoing party president Sheikh Hasina, the ruling party’s central leaders told The Independent that there is nothing to worry about the coronavirus if the country’s people remain alert over the deadly disease.

Earlier, AL president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday urged the people of the country to not worry about coronavirus, as Bangladesh is "capable of facing the disease". “Inshallah, we have enough capability (to tackle coronavirus) and we'll do that. There's nothing to worry about,” she said while inaugurating an event marking International Women's Day at Osmani Memorial Auditorium. She said the government is monitoring the situation round-the-clock and will take immediate appropriate steps if any problem arises.

Talking to this correspondent yesterday, AL joint general secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim said the party is taking elaborate preparations to fight the outbreak of coronavirus, which is now a global crisis. “We have already sat down with our party leaders and workers and given necessary instructions to help the country’s people and build up an awareness campaign among the people about the deadly virus,” he said. “The party’s highest policy-making body meeting will be held at Gono Bhaban on Monday (today). I hope our party chief will give us necessary instructions on the issue,” the senior AL leader said.

AL presidium member Abdur Rahman said the party is ready to help the country’s people in the endeavour to combat the coronavirus. “It’s a global crisis but we should not panic. All of us should remain alert and be serious about the virus. We will soon launch an awareness campaign against the virus formally on behalf of the ruling party,” he said. “We should all generate awareness about coronavirus. Besides, we should follow those instructions given by our health ministry to fight the virus,” he said.

Earlier, the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) yesterday confirmed that three Bangladeshis have been infected with coronavirus (COVID-19). Of them, two persons who recently returned from Italy are being treated at a hospital in the city, the IEDCR spokesperson said.

Coronavirus, which was first reported in China's Wuhan, has infected more than 100,000 people and killed over 3,400 people. The virus has emerged in more than 90 countries but more than half of those who contracted the virus have now recovered. It is now retreating in China and in nearby South Korea.
