The Bangladesh Student Council (BSC) of Rajshahi University (RU) has been working on establishing a strong youth volunteer network for the purpose of social development. The organisation has been working in different areas of the country since 2011.
It runs a project titled 'Pathchokro' that is a platform for academic studies. Besides, it distributes warm clothes among cold-affected people, arranges blood donation camps, distributes iftar among common people, pays for the lessons of poor students, helps flood-affected people, and establishes voluntary school for street children.
It also publishes a monthly paper named ‘Independent’s wall’.
Earlier, BSC established a school called ‘Muktodhara’ for street children in Vodra area in Rajshahi district. Around 100 street children are given education there every Saturday, Sunday, and Monday of the week. All the expenses are borne by the members of the organisation and donors.
A student of this school, Fahim Ahmed, lives with his grandmother on the streets. But acute poverty has not been able to wipe dreams off his eyes. He said he would like to be an engineer. Another student, Amena Begum, said that she wanted to be a teacher.
Since its inauguration, the school and its organisers have been reaching out to underprivileged people and street children. As they have no fixed source of financial support to run the operations smoothly, they gather funds via various paths, such as selling flowers and cake the on campus on occasions like Pahela Boishakh, Victory Day, National Independence Day, and Valentine’s Day. Another source of funds is the selling of various job-oriented books and newspapers. They also receive voluntary pay from their well-wishers.
Tawfiq Sani, general secretary of BSC, said, "Helping poor people will lead the country towards development. That's why we take initiatives to bring light to their lives.’
"We were inspired to set up this organisation from street boys on the campus. They are very keen to study, but their families could not afford it. We had to go from door to door to convince underprivileged families to send their children to the school, which was quite difficult," he added.
Md Sadequl Islam Chanraj, president of the organisation, said, "We have around 200 members, including 21 executive committee members, are eager to help operate the organisation."
Public Relation Administrator Prof Provash Kumar Karmakar said, "They are very keen to carry on voluntary activities and to help common people."
