Expelled Narsingdi Juba Mohila League general secretary Shamima Nur Papiya and her husband Sumon were yesterday placed on a 15-day remand in three cases filed against them for allegedly supplying counterfeit banknotes and drugs as well as her involvement in other illicit activities.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Mohammad Jasim sent the couple on a 10-day remand each in two cases filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station under the Special Power Act and the Arms Act.

Meanwhile, another court of Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Md Masud-Ur-Rahman granted a five-day remand for them in another case filed with Airport police station under the Special Power Act.

Papiya and Sumon were produced before the court with a 30-day remand prayer for each in the three cases. The court passed the order after Airport police station inspector (investigation) Kaikobad Kazi, who is also the investigating officer of the case, placed the the couple and their two associates before the court.

Papiya and Sumon are said to have made fortunes through “trading in drugs and arms, extortion, recruitment fraud, and other sorts of embezzlement”, the Rapid Action Battalion said following their arrests on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday said that Papiya and her backer will be brought to justice.

He made the remarks after a meeting with the Asian Development Bank's Country Director Manmohan Parkash

at the Secretariat. Obaidul Quader also the Road Transport and Bridges Minister said that the criminal will be punished in accordance with the law. This government hasn’t allowed anyone to get away with crimes, irrespective of their political affiliation. All criminals will be brought to justice. Papiya too will face justice as a criminal regardless of her political identity.
