Zimbabwe stand-in captain Craig Ervine said they have set their prime goal to get them back up to the top of the cricket. Ervine also said they have started the process for which they are working and having to bring in young players to build their pool of players.

“It’s a long process to rebuild. We have just started the process. It takes a bit of time,” said Craig Ervine, who got charge of the Test side in absence of regular captain Sean Williams.

“You have to bring in younger players to build a pool of players. Over the time one of our main goals is to get back to the top,” Ervine told the media at their pre-match day press conference in Mirpur yesterday. “But it all starts now with playing enough Tests every year and then climbing that ladder,” he added. The stand-in captain said they cherish to play more Tests but don’t get opportunity despite having their wishes.

“We don’t play many Test matches throughout the year. So any opportunity to get to play Test cricket is obviously one that we cherish,” he said. However, head coach Lalchand Rajput said they have come into the Dhaka Test in Bangladesh having played back-to-back Test against Sri Lanka. “2018 is history. We’ve come into this Test having played back-to-back Tests. The players are more in the game time. I am sure we will have a very good competition,” Lalchand Rajput said.

“As my captain said, Bangladesh is very strong at home. But it doesn’t take away anything from us, and we will give them a run for their money,” he added. Citing the name of Sean Williams, the Zimbabwean head coach said they will miss him a hell lot as a batsman, bowler and fielder. “He is our key player. He is our captain. We’ll be missing him as a batsman, bowler and fielder. He is one of our best all-rounders,” he said. Apart from Williams, Zimbabwe will not get the service of the fast bowler Kyle Jarvis and Tendai Chatara.
