Even though the metro rail will be operational from December 16 next year, a model of the coach will be on display from next month for public viewing. A mock-up of the coach was installed yesterday at the base of the exhibition centre at Uttara's Diabari. On December 26 last year, metro rail authorities brought a mock-up coach from Japan and kept it inside the under-construction exhibition and information centre.

MAN Siddique, managing director of the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Ltd (DMTCL), said the mock-up of the coach would give people an opportunity to get a first-hand experience of riding the metro rail. “They can get lessons from metro rail instructors about how to ride the metro as it’ll be the first of its kind here. We’ll put this coach on display to educate the public,” he added. Sources say that as part of the 50th Victory Day celebrations, the mock-up coach will be put on display on the birthday of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on March 17. The model will be displayed at the exhibition and information centre of MRT-6 in Dhaka’s Uttara in March.

The DMTCL, a government-owned company, is implementing the 20.1-km metro rail project. MRT Line-6 will connect Uttara and Motijheel through Mirpur, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Agargaon, Farmgate, Karwan Bazar, and Shahbagh. About 70 per cent of the first phase of the Metro rail (Uttara-Agargaon) has already been completed, while 40 per cent of the second phase (Agargaon-Motijheel) was completed in December last year.

“In 2021, an estimated 500,000 people will commute by the MRT Line-6 every day,” said Siddique. The total cost of the project is Tk. 21,985 crore. The government is contributing Tk. 5,390 crore, while the remaining Tk. 16,995 crore will come from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Commuters will be able to travel the entire distance in less than 40 minutes at an average speed of 100kmh. The metro rail is expected to reduce traffic gridlock drastically in Dhaka. According to a DMTCL official, an international-standard rolling stock will be deployed to maintain and use the MRT Line-6 properly. There will be 24 sets of trains, with each set initially comprising six cars. There are plans to expand the sets to eight cars in future. The sets of trains will be brought to the country by June 2021.
