Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's private industry and investment adviser Salman F Rahman yesterday presented the initial project plan of the ‘Kolakopa Civic District’ in the Nawabganj Upazila office. Under the project, the two upazilas of his constituency, Dohar and Nawabganj, would be made into model upazilas.

He named the project ‘Nagarnama—Bosobaser Vobissot (Living for future)’. He said, if the project was implemented, a four-lane road would be built and travelling to Nawabganj and Dohar from Dhaka would take just 30 minutes. He also spoke of reopening the old waterway from Dhaka to these two upazilas.

He said, under this project, the upazilas would be further

developed economically and socially. Government officials and other officers would have new offices and people of the area would get proper electricity, communication and other facilities.

The project is estimated to initially cost Tk 350 crore. It will be implemented through the Public Private Partnership (PPP) authority, he said.

“The land for our project is all government land. So, we will not have any financial difficulty to implement the project,” said Rahman. He added that this was not a master plan but an initial plan drawn up to take the consent of the people of his constituency.

Salman F Rahman said, if Nawabganj and Dohar were made into a model upazilas, other upazilas would follow suit.

Nasrul Hamid, state minister for power, energy and mineral resources, stressed the need for energy supply (electricity and gas) to implement this plan. The state minister said the project would have to be implemented with proper planning and direction.

“We have to keep in mind that we will have to give a proper shape to our Sonar Bangla that the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, had dreamt of. The villages should get all the benefits and facilities of a city without becoming a city,” he said.

The minister assured of power connection through a 20-inch gas pipeline and electricity substations in these two upazilas.

Nasrul Hamid said, “We have to work keeping in mind the socio-economic issues of the people of our country first and hope that, given proper direction and guidance, this project will be implemented by Salman Rahman.”

Bengal Institute’s director and architect Kazi Khalid Ashraf presented the project design.

Various business persons and cultural personalities of the upazila shared their views.

Later, Salman F Rahman donated 18 cows and 30 sewing machines to the poor in Joypara Bazar of Dohar upazila to reduce poverty.

Meanwhile, Rahman, who is also the MP of Dhaka-1, said that steps would be taken by the Fazlur Rahman Foundation (FRF) to lift people out of poverty.

“Under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina, we will eradicate poverty very quickly. It is her main goal,” he said.

Later, he attended the final match of the Sheikh Rasel Memorial Football tournament.

Benazir Ahmed, MP of Dhaka-20, Mahabubur Rahman, chairman of Dhaka Zila Parishad, Noor Ali, chairman of Unique Group, Md Sazzad Hossaain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Dohar police station, and HM Salauddin Ahmed, UNO of Nababganj, Mostafa Kamal, OC of Nawabganj Police Station, Nasir Uddin Jhilu, Upazila chairman and officials of different government were present.
