AL picks all new faces

BY-POLLS TO 5 JS SEATS, CCC MAYORAL ELECTION
STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
AL picks all new faces

The ruling Awami League has put faith in all new faces for the ensuing by-elections to five Jatiya Sangsad (JS) seats and the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) mayoral polls. As part of its election tactics to bring relatively new figures to the fore, the ruling party has chosen business leader Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin for contesting by-election to Dhaka-10 parliamentary seat, while Chattogram city unit AL Joint General Secretary Rezaul Karim Chowdhury has been picked to run the upcoming CCC mayoral race.

The AL has also chosen Bangladesh Krishak League General Secretary Umme Kulsum Smrity for Gaibandha-3 by-election, while Jashore district AL General Secretary Shahin Chakladar for Jashore-6, AL central leader Amirul Islam Milon for Bagerhat-4 and late AL leader Abdul Mannan's wife Sahadara Mannan for Bogra-1 by-elections.

The nominations were decided at a joint meeting of the AL parliamentary board and its local government nomination board, which was held at Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's official residence Ganabhaban last night with the ruling party President Sheikh Hasina in the chair. By-elections to Gaibandha-3, Bagerhat-4, and Dhaka-10 constituencies will be held on March 21. As per the schedules announced by the Election Commission (EC) on February 6, the deadline for submission of nomination paper is February 19, while the date for scrutinising the nomination papers is February 23, and the last date for withdrawal of candidacy is February 29.

The EC is likely to announce the polls schedules for the CCC election, and Bogra-1 and Jashore-6 parliamentary by-polls today (on Sunday).

The Gaibandha-3 and Bagerhat-4 constituencies fell vacant following the death of Awami League lawmakers Dr M Eunus Ali Sarkar and Dr Mozammel Hossain.

The Dhaka-10 JS seat fell vacant as then AL MP Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh resigned on December 29 ahead of contesting the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) election. The Bogra-1 and Jashore-6 constituencies fell vacant following the death of AL MPs Abdul Mannan and Ismat Ara Sadique.

Meanwhile, a total of 78

aspirants had collected nomination forms seeking party tickets to contest the by-polls to five parliamentary seats and a total of 20 aspirants had collected nomination forms for mayoral positions with 405 more collecting forms for councillor posts to contest the CCC elections, which is likely to be held in the last week of March.

The EC will, however, announce the CCC election schedule today (Sunday). Electronic voting machines (EVMs) would be used in the CCC polls, said the EC sources.

The last CCC election was held on April 28 in 2015. The current CCC’s five-year tenure will expire on August 5, 2020.

The ruling party had started distribution of application forms on February 8 at the AL president’s Dhanmondi political office and ended on Friday.

Meanwhile, outgoing DSCC mayor Sayeed Khokon on Friday had collected AL nomination form to contest the by-polls to Dhaka-10 constituency, but he failed to secure the party ticket.
