PM reshuffles cabinet ‘based on performance’

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT, Dhaka
PM reshuffles cabinet ‘based on performance’

Thirteen months after formation of her Cabinet for the third consecutive Awami League (AL)-led government, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday carried out a cabinet reshuffle. The Cabinet Division issued a gazette notification in this regard yesterday. The Minister for Housing and Public Works, SM Rezaul Karim, has been given the charge of Fisheries and Livestock. The State Minister for Social Welfare, Sharif Ahmed, has been made the State Minister for the Housing and Public ministry. State Minister of Fisheries and Livestock, Md Ashraf Ali, has been made State Minister of the Social Welfare Ministry.

At present, 25 Ministers, 19 State Ministers, and three Deputy Ministers, excluding Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, are working in different Ministries

and divisions.

Government sources said that the Prime Minister carried out the reshuffle on the basis of performance of over the past 13 months.

According to the sources, some new faces are likely to be included in the Cabinet as Ministers and State Ministers to speed up the administration work before the celebration of 'Mujib Barsho' to mark the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Mujib Borsho celebrations will

commence on March 17, 2020, and continue till March 26, 2021.

Senior AL leader Tofail Ahmed, Matia Chowdhury, and Nur Mohammad, are likely to join the Hasina cabinet soon, the sources claimed.

On July 11, 2019, the AL had expanded the Cabinet by inducting Fazilutunnesa Indira as State Minister and promoted Imran Ahmad from State Minister to full minister for the Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry.

On May 19 last year, Hasina reshuffled the Cabinet by curtailing the powers of two ministers and transferring one state minister from one ministry to another.

After coming to power through a landslide victory, the AL had formed a 47-member Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on January 7, 2019.
