SPORTS REPORTER, Dhaka
79 cricketers selected for BCL

The 2020 players’ draft of the upcoming Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL), the franchise-based longer version cricket tournament, was held at the media block of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur yesterday.

The four zonal teams, including two franchise teams: Walton Central Zone and Islami Bank East Zone along with two BCB teams North Zone and South Zone, that retained six players each, will participate in the eighth edition of the four-day competition. A total of 79 cricketers including national team players will take part in the BCL, schedule to kickoff January 31.

As Tigers will fly for Pakistan in February to play one Test from February 7-11, international players including Tamim Iqbal, Mominul Haque, Al Amin Hossain, Shafiul Islam, Ebadot Hossain, Abu Jayed, Saif Hasan, Nayeem Hasan, will play first and third round of the BCL. Mushfiqur Rahim, who skipped the Pakistan tour citing family reason over security concerns, will be available for selection after the first match while Imrul Kayes who is nursing an injury will miss the first-round match, according to the BCB media release published yesterday.

This year the tournament will be held in a single league which means all the four teams will play three matches each against three opponents at different venues of the country.

Sher-e-Bangla Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram, Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet and Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium in Cox’s Bazar-1 and 2 will host all the matches.

The first-round match between South Zone vs BCB North at ZACS, CTG and Islami Bank East Zone vs Walton Central Zone at SBNCS, Mirpur will be played from January 31- February 3. The second will be played from February 7-10 (South Zone vs Islami Bank East Zone at SKICS in Cox’s Bazar) and (Walton Central Zone vs BCB North at SICS in Sylhet) while the last round will take place from February 14-17 (South Zone vs Walton at SKICS-2 in Cox’s Bazar and Islami Bank vs BCB North at SKICS-1).

The final match which is expected to be day-night affair will be played at the SICS in Sylhet from February 21-24.

After the players’ draft event Walton Executive Director Uday Hakim told reporters, “We’re very happy with the team. Actually, we have become the part of the board to strengthen the pipeline of country’s cricket. This year it won’t be a two league tournament because of the busy international schedule of the players. It’s a board decision. We’re just trying to give our best possible effort to complete the event.”

Islami Bank PRO Nazrul Islam in a query said that, “We are with BCL from the very beginning. We’re working to develop Bangladesh’s cricket. There won’t be too much time for preparation before the BCL kicks off but we’ve to manage that. Many of our players have been playing for a long and hopefully it will be good tournament,” he said.
