Blame game dominates mayoral electioneering

Election campaigning was marred yesterday by the incident of Tikatuli attack, for which both the ruling Awami League and the BNP candidates blamed supporters of each other.

The attack left many people, including several journalists, wounded. Speaking at a press conference at his residence, BNP candidate Ishraque Hossain blamed the supporters of boat, the election symbol of the ruling party, for the attack during the electioneering in favour of the sheaf of paddy, the election symbol of the opposition party BNP.

Meanwhile, AL mayoral candidate Sheikh Fazle Hossain Taposh while talking to the reporters at Sabujbagh, alleged the BNP is hatching conspiracy to create panic as their blueprint of national politics did not work.

He said that he would submit a complaint in this regard with the Election Commission. “The BNP men carried out the attack while our activists were working on voter slips peacefully. I have heard that the BNP men fired bullets. It is unexpected and condemnable,” he observed. He said his party wants the city polls to be held in a free and fair manner. The city-dwellers have spontaneously given response to the elections, he observed. If voted, Taposh said that he would control drugs by introducing Ponchayet system and forging a social movement through it. He hoped that the city people would cast their votes in favour of boat.

Terming the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) a modern system, he said there is no apprehension in the minds of the city people about it. He also promised to reorganise the city’s mass transport in line with the module of a lively Dhaka. “I’ll take measure to introduce separate lanes for slow mode of vehicles.” Ishraque, on the other hand, said

they were carrying out the election campaign peacefully and the attack was carried out from the electoral office of the AL-backed ward councillor. “The ruling party men carried out the attack without any provocation. We have asked our supporters to remain calm. People will give a befitting reply to the attack on February 1 through their ballots,” he said. Ishraque rejected the allegation of carrying out attack by the BNP men saying that the ruling party quarters were trying to shift the blame on them, but “people do not believe it”.

He also alleged that there was no presence of the law enforcers when the incident took place at Tikatuli around 1:45pm. Replying to a question, he rejected the allegation of shooting from within the BNP camp, saying that question of shooting by his party men does not arise as they didn’t have any arms with them. Earlier, the supporters of both Ishraque and Taposh locked in clashes at Tikatuli as soon as the supporters of Ishraque reached in front of the Central Women’s College.
