ICJ order a victory for humanity

Says Foreign Minister Abdul Momen

ICJ order a victory for humanity

Both the Government of Bangladesh and former diplomats have termed the order of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) as a great opportunity for Bangladesh to expedite the repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar. In its order, the ICJ yesterday said that Myanmar should take all steps within its power to prevent the commission of all atrocities against the Rohingyas—including killing members of the community. It also asked Myanmar to submit a report to the court on the steps it will take in keeping with the order within four months.

In his reaction, foreign minister AK Abdul Momen, who is on a visit to Ecuador, said: “It’s a victory for humanity and a milestone for human rights activists across all nations.”

“This is a victory for The Gambia, OIC, Rohingyas, and of course, for Bangladesh. God bless humanity and also the ‘mother of humanity’ Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” he added.

The minister also said: “The ICJ has accepted all four provisional measure requests in a unanimous (all 15 judges) verdict and asked Myanmar to submit a report within four months

to confirm the steps being taken. After that, it asked Myanmar to report the situation every six months.”

Momen also said that the court had asked Myanmar to stop genocide and atrocities against Rohingyas. “This verdict will hopefully stop any recurrence of ethnic cleansing and genocide,” he added.

“This order should bring Myanmar to its senses. It repeatedly promised that they would take back their people now. The court has also mentioned that safety and security should be provided to the Rohingyas. Myanmar should do it,” he noted.  “It’s a victory for Rohingyas. They will now return to Myanmar with safety and security,” he said.

On the other hand, former ambassador M Humayun Kabir told The Independent: “The order will definitely create pressure on Myanmar. The time has come to resolve the Rohingya crisis. We have a lot of things to do.”

He also said that since the court considered the report of United Nations fact-finding bodies before delivering the provisional measures, it clearly signals that Myanmar has to follow the order. “Bangladesh should strike while the iron is hot. It must now decide on taking steps to resolve the crisis,” he added.
