Four students tortured on DU campus

Four students tortured on DU campus

Four suspected activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student body of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, were beaten up allegedly by some activists of ruling party’s associate student body Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on the Dhaka University campus yesterday. The incident took place at the guest room of Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Huq Hall in the early hours. The injured were handed over to police and admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at 3am.

The alleged involvement of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in this incident has triggered the memory of the brutal killing of Abrar Ahmed, a student of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) who was tortured and then killed by the ruling party student leaders.

BCL leaders beat up the students indiscriminately with iron rods, sticks, and stumps. Zahurul Haq Hall BCL Vice-President Anwar Hossain, Joint Secretary Amir Hamza, and Hall Sangsad VP Saifullah Abbasi led the attack using stamps and sticks, according to eyewitnesses. The four injured students are Mukim Chowdhury of the tourism and hospitality department, Sanwar Hossain of the political science department, Minhaj Uddin of the Islamic history department, and Afsar Uddin of the Arabic department.

BCL insiders said some leaders of the Chhatra League had taken Mukim, a second-year student, to the guest room for quizzing, suspecting him to be a ‘Shibir’ activist. He was tortured after he denied having links with Shibir. Later, the BCL activists called three of his close friends to that room and tortured them for at least four hours, leaving them critically injured.

Later, the hall administration handed over the injured students to Shahbagh police, who admitted them to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. General students said the four students had been tortured for at least four hours with rods and sticks. They also said it was for the university authorities and police to take action against students if they did something wrong.

The alleged BCL leaders claimed they had found some books of the Chhatra Shibir, but failed to produce any proof or name. They were also unable to prove the four students’ involvement with Chhatra Shibir. BCL leader Amir Hamza said: “We did not torture them. We just called them for quizzing after having found some books related to Chhatra Shibir.” Amir Hamza was temporarily expelled from the Chhatra League for beating a drug seller in Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Another BCL leader, Anwar Hossain, admitted that they tortured the students. “We beat them a lot, but they denied the allegation,” he told journalists. Amir Hamza and Anwar Hossain are followers of BCL central president Al-Nahean Khan Joy. Shahbagh police station officer-in-charge (OC) Abul Hasan said: “The injured students were handed over to the police at around 3am. The university authorities have not filed any case yet in this regard.”

DU proctor Dr AKM Golam Rabbani said: “We have been informed about the incident. We will look into the matter.” “How can BCL men torture students when hall and university authorities are there? It’s a crime. Action will be taken against those who violate discipline,” he added. DU students held a demonstration against the incident. A procession was brought out on the DU campus at 3pm yesterday under the banner of the Anti-terrorism Student’s Unity, led by DUCSU VP Nurul Haque Nur and others.

While talking after the procession, DUCSU VP Nurul Haque Nur said: “Those students were tortured mercilessly. Even after holding an important post, I became a victim of BCL goons. So one can imagine what safety general students have." "The proctor of DU is worse than the Chhatra League. With his support and cooperation, the BCL is conducting these criminal activities. We demand the resignation of the proctor, putting an end to the abuse of students in the guest room, and legalisation of dorm seats from the first year," he added.
