The 12th death anniversary of Natyacharya Selim Al Deen was observed in a befitting manner on Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus yesterday.

JU Vice Chancellor Professor Farzana Islam paid homage to Selim Al Deen by placing floral wreath at his tomb on the campus in the morning.

 Earlier, Drama and Dramatics department of the university brought out a rally from the old Arts faculty premises. The rally paraded main streets of the campus, which ended at the grave of Selim Al-Deen.

 Recalling Selim Al Deen’s contribution, Professor Dr Farzana Islam said, “Every year, on this day, we commemorate the great theatre personality Selim Al Deen. He has an unforgettable contribution to the drama world of the country. We are very grateful to Selim Al Deen as he gave us a new concept, ‘Gram Theatre’. He will live forever through his valuable works in the field of drama.”

Noted playwright Nasir Uddin Yousuf Bachchu, JU Drama and Dramatics department, Bangladesh Gram Theatre, Dhaka Theatre, Selim Al Deen Foundation, Arshinagar Theatre, Sawapnadal, Combine Cultural Alliance, Jahangirnagar Theatre, Puppet Theatre Research Centre, Teacher and Student Centre (TSC), Kalma Theatre, Shaheed Titu Theatre and Selim Al Deen Memorial Society also placed floral wreaths at the grave of Selim Al Deen.

 Marking the day, a sole photography exhibition titled ‘Selim Al Deen in the lens of Barin Ghosh’ on the biography of Natyacharya was held at the old Arts building in the campus.

 Moreover, the students of Drama and Dramatics department staged ‘Natoker Gaan’ at the Theatre Lab of old Arts building in the morning.

 Besides, a play titled ‘Dohondoyita’ was staged at the Theatre Lab of Zahir Raihan auditorium in the evening. Professor AKM Yousuf Hasan directed the play.

 Natyacharya Selim Al Deen was the founding chairman of Drama and Dramatics department of JU. Born on August 18, 1949 in Feni, Selim Al Deen joined Bangla department of JU as a lecturer in 1974. In 1986, he founded the Drama and Dramatics department. He died on January 14 in 2008.
