Mash, Riyad hail BCB pay hike decision in all formats

Bangladesh national team’s two most senior players Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and Mahmudullah Riyad welcomed the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) decision to increase the Bangladesh’s centrally contracted players’ match fee in all three formats from the upcoming cycle.

The BCB in its board meeting on Sunday came to a decision to hike the players match fee after a wait of three years in which each player will now receive Tk 2 lakh per T20I, Tk 3 lakh per ODI and a significant amount of Tk 6 lakh per Test match (more than 70 per cent from the previous amount).

In the previous 2017-2019 cycle, centrally contracted players earned Tk 1 lakh 25 thousand for T20I, 2 lakh for ODI and Tk 3.50 lakh per Test.

After the eliminator match between Dhaka Platoon and Chattogram Challengers, skippers from both sides, came up with their respective remarks heaping praise on the BCB’s decision that brought a change raising the centrally contracted players’ match fee.

“I think it’s a very good decision taken by the BCB. Mainly the splitting was a very good initiative. Players who play in all three formats should earn more amount of match fee. It should be same for those players who prefer or give more priority to Test cricket,” Mashrafe told reporters at the SBNCS press conference room yesterday.

“With such decision, I also think the scenario of Bangladesh’s Test cricket might change in future. Of course, it’s a wonderful decision because now a days it’s pretty often heard that many players refuse to play Test cricket. But this decision will gradually gear the players’ speed to turn their attention to Test cricket. They will now think that if I play more and more Test matches, I will earn a good salary. So the BCB’s decision of splitting is obviously a nice initiative,” Mashrafe further added.

Like Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, new T20 captain Mahmudullah Riyad said that the BCB decision was required for players and Bangladesh cricket.

“I pretty much welcome the BCB decision and it’s definitely a positive initiative. I think players will show their keen interest on Test cricket. I’m not saying there was no interest from the players. But this initiative will drive the players and encourage them more,” Mahmudullah said.

“As I always said cricket is bread and butter for us. At the end of the day we got salary and earn money from it. So, I appreciate the decision because it would be great for us,” Mahmudullah concluded.
