BCB, PCB may talk in Dubai to end current stalemate

BANGLADESH TOUR OF PAKISTAN
SPORTS REPORTER, Dhaka
BCB, PCB may talk in Dubai to end current stalemate

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hassan Papon was scheduled to fly to Dubai Monday night to attend the International Cricket Council (ICC) Governance Review Committee meeting.

He confirmed this to the media while speaking after an important meeting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Sunday.

“I’d like to see what actually happens. I’ll return on Tuesday,” he said.

“ICC chairman Shashank Manohar, who will also attend the meeting, earlier told me to meet him. The issue of the Pakistan tour may be discussed. If not, I’ll try to know what will happen about the tour,” Papon told the media.

Papon is expected to meet Shashank Manohar in Dubai, where Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) president Ehsan Mani will be meeting his BCB counterpart.

This meeting will take place on the sidelines of the ICC Governance Review Committee meeting, following which the PCB will provide further updates on Bangladesh cricket team’s upcoming tour of Pakistan.

The Dubai meeting is a continuation of the discussion process, which the PCB has followed to reach a consensus with the BCB on its national men’s cricket team’s tour itinerary. As a result, the fate of the Bangladesh-Pakistan series is likely to be finalised this week.

The uncertainty over the Bangladesh team’s Pakistan tour still remains due to the security issue. The BCB has said the government does not want to send the team to Pakistan for a longer period.

This time, Bangladesh wants to play T20 series only. Then, they’ll decide if they could play Tests on Pakistan soil.

Bangladesh was scheduled to inform their final decision on the Pakistan tour after the board meeting, but it did not happen.

On the other hand, the PCB does not want to play T20 only and prefers to play Test cricket first. In such a situation, the fate of the series hangs in the balance.

“It’s not easy. Multiple factors are involved. It’s not such a thing that I’d ask someone in the ICC and he’d settle the matter. It’s something to be discussed and then we’ll arrive at a decision. It’s not that easy,” Papon said.

“We’re not opposed to international cricket making a return to Pakistan. We want to support that. If we would do that, we wouldn’t have played even Twenty20 matches. There is a difference between Test and T20 cricket. We’ve to play three T20 matches, while we’ve to play 450 overs in Test,” he explained.

“If you think about the security issue, T20 is a better option. When we see that other teams haven’t gone to Pakistan for so long, it’s the security issue that first comes to our mind. And so, we would like to play a T20 series first. Then, we’d see if we could play Tests there,” he added.
