BNP complains of campaign obstruction

BNP mayoral candidates — Tabith Awal for Dhaka North and Ishraque Hossain for Dhaka South city corporation — have alleged that they are facing obstruction to carry out election campaigning as a number of their activists have already been arrested by law-enforcers. While talking to the reporters separately yesterday, they also questioned the neutrality of the Election Commission (EC) and sought cooperation from them to maintain a congenial atmosphere so that poll campaigns can be carried out smoothly. The two BNP candidates also expressed vow to continue their election campaign defying all sorts of obstructions and stay in the field of elections to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) slated for January 30.

Tabith Awal, who started electioneering for third day after visiting the mazar of Hazrat Shah Ali Bagdadi (rh) at Mirpur Section-1, alleged that cadres of his opponent ruling party candidate were creating obstructions by carrying out attacks on his party men while chanting ‘Joy Bangla’ slogans. “We could not carry out election campaigns properly due to hurling of brickbats by the ruling party supporters. We now look forward to the EC role,” he said.

He claimed that at least one BNP activist was injured in the attacks perpetrated allegedly by the ruling party cadres. His activists also came under attacks on Saturday, he added.

Tabith also observed that police was implicating his activists in false cases while AL cadres were carrying out attack on them, which means that the EC is not playing a neutral role.

He, however, carried out election campaigning in different areas in Mirpur covering Uttar Bishil, Gudaraghat, Chiriyakhana RFoad, Eidgah Ground, and South Bishil.

BNP leaders Nipun Roy Chowdhury, Saiful Alam Nirab, Sultana Ahmed and councilor candidates Delwar Hossain Dulu for ward No- 7 and Masud Khan for ward no-10 were present during the campaigning.

Tabith alleged that at least five of his activists were arrested by police while carrying out poll campaigning in Mirpur Sony Cinema Hall area yesterday.

In another incident, the supporters of Tabith Awal came under attack in Mazar Road area at about 11:00am yesterday while they started gathering there to carry out election campaigning.

Some leaders and activists of the ruling party’s affiliate bodies – Bangladesh Chhatra League and Juba League – allegedly chased the activists campaigning for the sheaf of paddy, the poll symbol of the BNP and hurled brickbats at them, he said in a press release.

One person, named Arif, was injured in the attack while the law-enforcers also arrested some of their activists during polls campaigning, the release added.

Talking to the journalists, Tabith said they wouldn’t go back despite obstruction by the ruling party men. Instead, he vowed to go ahead taking people with them.

Saying that the ruling party attacks proved their earlier apprehensions only, he demanded that the EC create a congenial atmosphere to help carry out polls campaign without any interruption.

Tabith also sent a letter to the EC following attacks on his supporters. He sought safety and security and demanded investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, BNP mayoral candidate Ishraque Hossain for Dhaka South came up with an allegation that they were being obstructed in carrying out polls campaigns.

Speaking at a roadside rally in Lakshmibazar area, he claimed that five of his supporters were arrested from Wari area and were released later.

He expressed his concern over the incident and expressed his vow that they won’t go back despite, what he said, the ruling party attacks.

“We are getting obstructed in many ways…but we will not back down. None will be able to stop us,” he asserted.

Earlier, he carried out poll campaign in different areas including Kaltabazar, Panir Tanki, Bahadur Shah Park, Bangla Bazar and Shambazar and sought vote for him.

BNP Standing Committee Member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain inaugurated his poll campaign.
