Indian players dominated the opening day of Yonex-Sunrise International Badminton tournament as both male and female shuttlers won their respective matches.

The tournament was inaugurated yesterday at the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Indoor Stadium with State Minister for Youth Sports Zahid Ahsan Russel unveiled the logo and announced the opening of the 19-nation tournament in a colorful ceremony yesterday.

The seventh edition of the biggest international badminton tournament in the country, organised by the Yonex-Sunrise, a Singapore based multinational company, powered by Akash, Beximco Communications Limited.

Indian male players won all their matches against Bangladesh, while Elina Sultana and Urmi Akhter of Bangladesh managed to move into the women’s singles next round.  Elina defeated  Rashid Masha of Maldives 21-7, 21-3 while Urmi received walk over against her Thai opponent.

Meanwhile, a total of 168 shutlers including 56 women from 19 countries including Bangladesh will compete in the $25,000 prize money with Taka 70,00,000 as budget of the tournament. Five events will be held during the six-day tournament. The events are: Men’s single, women’s single, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.

Zahid Ahsan Russel in his address in the opening ceremony of the badminton tournament mentioning the win of 19 gold medals in the SA Games said that they (Ministry) are always ready to provide proper support for the development of sports.

“Government is very much sports friendly and ready to give all out support for the development of sports and I think we won 19 gold medals due to support from the government. All the medal winners will be accorded a reception by the prime minister at the Ganobhaban Complex.”

The sports minister awarded Taka 10,000 each to Salman Khan and Urmi Akhter for winning bronze in the SA Games.

Abdul Malek, president of the Bangladesh Badminton Federation and the Secretary of the Ministry for Information, Major (retd) Ruhul Amin, Head of Human Resources of Beximco Communications Limited, general secretary of the BBF Amir Hossain Bahar, Mojibur Rahman, Deputy Secretary of the Sports Ministry attended the function.
