Dhaka AL city units get new leaders

The Awami League high command brought new faces in key positions of its two city units — Dhaka North and South -- at its triennial council session yesterday in a bid to strengthen the party. The council was held in a festive mood in presence of hundreds of leaders and activists at the city’s Suhrawardy Udyan. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also president of the AL, inaugurated the session by hoisting the national flag and releasing pigeons and balloons. Later, the AL's central leaders, led by its General Secretary Obaidul Quader, announced the names of the new leaders for the two city units.

Sheikh Bazlur Rahman and SM Mannan Kachi have been made president and general secretary, respectively, of the AL's Dhaka North unit for the next three years. Abu Ahmad Mannafi and Humayan Kabir have been made president and general secretary, respectively, of the AL's Dhaka South unit for the same period.

The new leaders said they will work for strengthening the hands of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. They also

vowed to work together with leaders of the outgoing committees to strengthen the organisation, they added.

After announcing the names of the new leaders, the AL general secretary told the media that he announced the names of the new presidents and secretaries after holding discussions with party President Sheikh Hasina as aspirant leaders failed to reach a consensus in this regard.

“I hope all leaders and activists of the city units will accept our party chief’s decision,” he said. Haji Abul Hasnat, outgoing president of the Dhaka South City AL, presided over the council session. The last council session of undivided Dhaka City Unit Awami League was held on 27 December 2012, but the committee was announced on 10 April 2016 after the unit split into two in 2015.

At a press conference on April 10, 2016, former AL general secretary late Syed Ashraful Islam had announced the names of AKM Rahmatullah and Sadeq Khan as president and secretary, respectively, of the Dhaka North City AL, and Abul Hasnat and Shahe Alam Murad as president and secretary, respectively, of the South city unit.
