Salman hopes improvement in ease of doing business index

Prime Minister’s Private Industry and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman said all concerned need to work hard to improve the investment climate and place Bangladesh to the double digit slot in the ease of doing business index by 2021.

“We need to work hard and more to improve the investment climate and I hope that by 2021, Bangladesh will be able to place it within the double digit in the ease of doing business index,” he said.

The PM’s Adviser was addressing a seminar on “Country Competitiveness of Bangladesh: Challenges and Way Forward” as the chief guest organized by Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) on Saturday at a hotel in the capital.

Chaired by DCCI President Osama Taseer, BGMEA President Dr Rubana Huq, Policy Adviser of a2i programme of the ICT Division Anir Chowdhury, and Chairman and CEO of Pran RFL Group Ahsan Khan Chowdhury spoke, among others, on the occasion.

Executive Director of SANEM Dr Selim Raihan presented the key-note paper.

Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Salman F Rahman said various reforms have been done by the present government and also urged the business community to reach this message to the mass people as well as in the international arena.

“Bangladesh has done tremendous successes especially in the agriculture sector,” he said and called for diversification of agro-products for boosting export.

Noting that access to finance is still a challenge for the entrepreneurs, Salman suggested for establishing a specialized bond market for long-term financing mechanism.

For better competitiveness of the country and to cope up with the challenges of 4th industrial revolution, he stressed on skills development.

The speakers at the seminar said country competitiveness is inevitable for improved economy while policy reforms, skills development, SEZs, product diversification and faster implementation of the mega projects are the key changers.

BGMEA President Dr. Rubana Huq urged for forging inter-ministerial coordination to have a smoother decision making process.

She also urged for making innovation and research & development (R&D) in the RMG sector for its sustainability.

“Besides the RMG sector, we need to focus on diversification of other sectors to compete in the international market.” she added.

DCCI President Osama said the private sector is the lifeline of the country’s economy while investment and trade promotion largely rely on doing business and the competitiveness of a country.
