A fatal road crash killed at least 10 people yesterday, including five members of a family, after a bus collided with a microbus on the Dhaka–Mawa highway at Sholghar in Sreenagar upazila of Munshiganj. The accident took place within weeks of enforcement of a new transport act to bring discipline on roads and highways.

The accident, which also left 15 others injured, occurred around 2:15 p.m. The ill-fated microbus was carrying a wedding party. Meanwhile, two people were killed in separate road accidents in Lohagara and Sitakuda upazilas of Chattogram yesterday. Nine of the deceased in the Munshigang crash were identified as Abdur Rashid, 70, Nipa Akhter, 24, Tabasum Akhter, 6, Renu Akhter, 10, Md Tahsan, 5, Keramat Ali, 70, Mofidul Mollah, 60, Md Billal 40, and Runa Akter, 24. Identity of one was yet to be known.

Md Jayedul Alam, superintendent of police at Munshiganj, said: “Six people died on the spot. Two died while being taken to a nearby hospital. Two more died at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.”

Dhaka Medical College police outpost in-charge, inspector Bacchu Mia, said,:“Jahangir Hossain, 45, and Runa Aktar, 24—two of the injured—were brought to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital emergency section around 4:30 p.m. Runa Aktar died at 4.50 p.m., while Jahangir Hossain remained in a critical condition.

Police and witnesses said the Mawa-bound passenger bus belonging to Swadhin Paribahan was on its way to Shimulia Ghat in Louhajang. A microbus carrying a wedding party, travelling on the same highway, was heading towards Dhaka. On the way to the Sholghar area of Sreenagar upazila, the bus collided with the microbus. Six people died on the spot and two died after they were taken to the Sreenagar Health Complex. Two others succumbed to their injuries at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Sources at the Srinagar Upazila Health Complex said 10 injured people were being treated there.

Hedayetul Islam Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sreenagar police station, said: “The microbus was carrying a bridal party to Kamrangirchar in Keraniganj from Konkoshar in Louhajang upazila.

“The bus driver fled after the accident. Police seized both the vehicles from the spot,” he added.

The road crash took place after the Road Transport Act came into effect on November 1. The Road Transport Bill 2018 was passed by Parliament on September 19, 2018. The law has a provision of up to five years’ jail for any death or serious injuries caused by reckless or negligent driving.

UNB adds: In Chattogram, two people died in road crashes in Lohagara and Sitakuda upazilas. The deceased were identified as Md Kalam, 35, a van puller hailing from Barabkunda area of Sitakunda and Md Ismail, 21, son of Md Ibrahim of Bandarban’s Lama Upazila.
