Juba League awaits fresh blood at the helm

Juba League awaits fresh blood at the helm

The seventh triennial council session of the Awami Juba League, the youth organisation of the ruling Awami League, will be held today at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital. The youth body’s last council session was held in 2012, when Omar Faroque Chowdhury was made the chairman. Chowdhury, however, was relieved of his responsibilities following his alleged involvement in corruption and various irregularities.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will formally inaugurate the Juba League council today at 11am. Aspirant leaders continued hectic lobbying till yesterday, eyeing various posts. According to party insiders, the high command has been searching for fresh blood for the two key posts of chairman and general secretary. The party high command may even choose a new face for the Juba League chairman’s position from outside the central members of the organisation, they said.

Many new faces might be inducted in the Juba League central committee through today’s council session as most of its presidium members have crossed the 55-year age limit set by its organisational chief Sheikh Hasina in a meeting at Ganabhaban recently.

According to the party’s Dhanmondi office, as happened in the past, this time also the Juba League is likely to get a relative of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for the chairman’s post. Bangabandhu’s relatives, including the organisation’s founding chairman Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni, Amir Hossain Amu, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim and Omar Faroque Chowdhury were made chairmen of the Juba League in the past committees. The names of Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, son of Sheikh Moni and Sheikh Fazle Fahim, son of Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, presidium member of Bangladesh Awami League, came up in the discussions for the post of Juba League chairman.

Meanwhile, AL lawmaker Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh is not vying for any post of the Juba League as he would like to contest for the upcoming Dhaka South city corporation elections, said AL insiders. Many Juba League leaders are vying for the top two posts. They include presidium members Ataur Rahman Ata and Belal Hossain, joint secretaries Mohiuddin Ahmed Mohi, Monjur Alam Shaheen and Subrata Pal, organising secretaries Badiul Alam, Faruk Hasan Tuhin and Fazlul Haque Atiq.

Sources said former Chhatra League leaders Bahadur Bepari, Ishaq Ali Khan Panna, Mahmud Hasan Ripon, Mahfujul Haider Chowdhury Roton, Syed Alaul Islam Shaikat and incumbent publicity secretary Iqbal Mahmood Bablu may get important posts.

Talking to this correspondent, AL office secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap has said the party chief, Sheikh Hasina, has decided to change the existing leadership of the Juba League through the upcoming council sessions. “As far as I know, fresh blood will be inducted into the central committee of the body through the upcoming central council,” he added.

Former Juba League chairman and AL joint general secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak said, “It’s very difficult to say anything about the next leadership of the organisation. As far as I know, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is looking for new faces for the youth body.”

Meanwhile, several Juba League aspirant leaders called upon PM Sheikh Hasina to remove all corrupt leaders from the organisation and induct honest, dedicated and committed leaders into the new committee through the council session on Saturday.

Earlier, Chayon Islam and Harun-ur-Rashid were made the convener and member secretary respectively of the preparatory committee of the upcoming Juba League council session. The first council session of the Juba League was held in 1974, when Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni was made the chairman of the organisation. He was the nephew of the founding father of the nation, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The Awami Juba League hit the headlines recently on account of its top leaders, who were allegedly involved in various irregularities, including the casino business in the city under the patronage of its chairman Omar Faroque Chowdhury.
