State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury on Friday said a project to develop the Chilmari River Port will soon be approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec).
“Hopefully, Ecnec will approve a project of Tk 300 crore within 15 to 20 days,” he said while visiting Chilmari River Port of Kurigram.
He said discussions are going on about signing a protocol agreement with Bhutan. Bangladesh already has such an agreement with India.
“This river route will be opened soon as an international route,” Khalid said, adding that the Prime Minister has already directed the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to open a customs office at Chilmari River Port.
He said he hoped this area will be financially benefitted when the port opens.
