ACC sues removed DSCC councillor

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
ACC sues removed DSCC councillor
AKM Mominul Haque Shaeed

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against a removed Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) councillor, AKM Mominul Haque Shaeed, for amassing wealth worth Tk 4.47 crore illegally. ACC public relations officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharjee said the commission assistant director, M Ataur Rahman Sarkar, filed the case as the commission found that Mominul, ward councillor of the Fakirapool-Arambagh area in the capital, had accumulated the wealth through illegal business, including running casinos.

According to the findings, Mominul, Dhaka Mariner Youngs Club Hockey committee chairman and Mohammedan Sporting Club member, showed his wealth to be worth Tk. 1.54 crore in his tax return, although the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit found Tk 2.93 crore more in his name.

On October 17, the government showcaused Mominul for staying abroad without the ministry’s permission and not attending the corporation’s board meetings in violation of the Local Government (City Corporation) Act 2009. Mominul was also the general secretary of the Bangladesh Hockey Federation.

In September, the RAB seized illegal casino gambling equipment from Dhaka Mariner Youngs Club and Mohammedan Sporting Club and arrested a few people involved in casino business. On June 26, DSCC mayor Sayeed Khokon demanded Mominul’s suspension for breaching discipline as he remained absent from board meetings and went abroad without permission.

A showcause notice was issued on July 7, asking Mominul to explain his position for going abroad without permission and remaining absent from 13, out of 18, board meetings of the corporation held since 2015. On September 30, the ACC launched inquiries to detect the illegal wealth of the people involved in the unauthorised casino operations and other illegal businesses.
