Bashir Ahmed Award’ named after Ekushey Padak-recipient and National Film Award-winning late veteran playback singer Bashir Ahmed has been introduced for the first time.

The award, initiated by Humaira Bashir and Raja Bashir—the two eligible heirs of Bashir Ahmed, was conferred for the first time on six noted personalities of the country for their significant contribution to the respective fields.

Marking the 80th birth anniversary of the great singer, the first edition of the award ceremony was held at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital on Sunday.

The award recipients were veteran singer Ferdousi Rahman, lyricist Shahidullah Farazi, composer Sheikh Sadi Khan, journalist Nasir Ahmed, instrumentalist Chandan Dutta and head of programme department of NTV Mustafa Kamal Syed.

Among the awardees, Ferdousi Rahman was bestowed with the lifetime achievement award. “I have received many awards in my life, but this is my award named after a prominent singer. I feel wonderful with this recognition. Bashir Ahmed will live forever through the initiative taken by two of his eligible descendants”, she said.

Organised by Sargam Sound Station, the programme also included a discussion on the life of Bashir Ahmed by eminent music exponents, and music performances by different artistes.

Also, a tribute song titled ‘Tumar Upoma Tumi’--rendered by three of his talented disciples, Kanak Chapa, Humayra Bashir and Raja Bashir, was released under the banner of Sargam Sound Station in memory of the music legend.
