Barishal city suffered from water-logging and the lack of power and water supplies for more than 24 hours from yesterday noon after being hit by Cyclone Bulbul. The city recorded 324 mm of rainfall in the last 27 hours. A large part of Barishal city is still without power, which, in turn, has hit water supplies.  The storm struck the city around noon yesterday and lasted till 2:00 pm, killing a woman, damaging 2,000 houses, thousands of trees, 120 km of roads, aman crops on about 1 lakh hectares, rabi crops on about 6,000 hectares and slums. Most people remained indoors and attendance in educational institutions was far less than normal. Very few vehicles were seen on the roads and transporters charged exorbitant fares.

Water-logging in city roads and low-lying areas because of the lack of a proper drainage and sewerage system and over-flooded river and canal banks caused immense suffering to city dwellers. Makeshift shops and hawker markets remained close during much of the day and kitchen markets had very few customers.

Shahidul Islam, a gauge reader in the hydrology department of the Water Development Board’s Barishal office, said information gathered from various stations indicated that the water levels of most of the 12 major rivers, including the Meghna, Arial Khan, Kirtankhola and their branches, had risen close to the danger mark. A survey of various city areas revealed that the rainwater following the downpour took a long time to clear because of the poor drainage and sewer system. The low-lying areas and areas close to the Kirtankhola experienced flash floods caused by a tidal surge and rainwater.

Sources in the West Zone Power Distribution Company (Division 2) of Barisal said power supply was stopped to avoid accidents from torn live electricity wires. Again, resumption of power supply was delayed because branches of trees had fallen on the power lines. Power supply resumed in most of the areas from this afternoon after 31 hours. “We are checking and repairing the lines and power supply to all areas would be normal soon,” said the WZPDCO official.  Sources in the Barisal City Corporation’s water supply department said pumps that lift water could not be operated in the absence of power. The pumps would start functioning as soon as power supply becomes normal, they said.
