Habibul Bashar Sumon, selection panel member of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), appreciated the overall performance of the Bangladesh team especially youngsters in the just-concluded T20 series in India. He stated that they have lost the series 2-1 in India where many of the teams can’t do that, in that sense, their result has been much better

Sumon also said they proved ‘wrong’ the anticipation that they will be whitewashed by the Team India in the three-match Twenty20 International series what was before the India tour.

He added it was important series for them to play better cricket against India though it was not easier for them to play against the team the likes of India on their own home territory.

“The series in India was a real challenge for us,” said Habibul Bashar Sumon, who appeared to witness the preparation of the Bangladesh Emerging Team’s practice session ahead of the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup-2019, starting from Tuesday (today).

“We went to India with almost a new-look team (without mainstay Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal). We had to bring some players back including Al Amin Hossain and Arafat Sunny. Along with them, some young players have gone there. We had a challenge for us how we can do in this series,” Sumon told media at the National Cricket Academy of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.

“But it has been better for us to do well,” he added.

Bashar said he feels better to think this their players especially youngsters have proved they can also perform well. He thinks that the competition in this way if it is increased in their T20 Team what will also be better and more important for the next World Cup.

“As it was good news for Bangladesh cricket, I think competition in our T20 Team will be increased what was important for us also. It has been good for us,” he opined.

“We will get a chance to play some more games ahead of ICC World T20 2020. Normally as a Bangladesh we get less chance to play T20 matches. This time we will get some more chances to play. Hopefully our preparation before World Cup will be done and the team will also make a good result,” he added.

Citing the names of Mohammad Naim Sheikh whose flamboyant innings of 81 off 48 balls that generated a glimmer of hopes in Tigers’ tent to triumph the series-deciding fixture, Bashar said he will be a of good performer in future but it was too early to make a right comment over him.

“Scoring runs by Naim Sheikh was good news for Bangladesh cricket. He is being nurtured in the High Performance Team since last two-three years. For this, the performance from this youngster was very imperative,” he said of Naim Sheikh.

“Many talented players come to the team but everybody can’t show off themselves. Seeing Naim Sheikh, it has been deemed he is a performer. He made a big score in the last and third match of the series though he can’t do make bigger scores in the initial two matches. He showed all he can make big score. A special quality is needed for a player to make runs in international cricket, I think, which knack he has,” he added.

“But it’ll be too early to make a comment over him. He just played three international matches for the national team. It is being thought that the investment we did behind him will be benefited us in future,” he signed off.
