Sramik League council today

ABU JAKIR, Dhaka
Sramik League council today

The Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, had founded the Jatiya Sramik League in 1969 in a bid to protect the rights of workers. But its leaders are now busy making money and wealth for themselves. The leaders of the current 35-member central committee of the Sramik League, a trade union body affiliated to the Awami League (AL), have got mired in different irregularities, including making "pocket committees" and promoting leaders in exchange for money and amassing illegal wealth using the name of the organisation, said AL and Sramik League insiders.

There are 27 CBA (Collective Bargaining Agent) leaders out of the 35. They are indifferent towards their respective jobs in their offices. The main job of these CBA leaders is transferring, appointing and helping someone in promotion in their respective public offices. Some of the CBA leaders have already gone into retirement but are still using official transports for their own work.

The last council session of the Jatiya Sramik League was held seven years back on July 17, 2019, where Sukkur Mahmud and Sirajul Islam were made president and secretary, respectively.

The home district of Sukkur Mahmud is Narayanganj. He is also president of the Narayanganj district Sramik League. Besides, he is also president of the Mukta Garments Sramik Federation.

Insiders said the incumbent president and secretary would not have approved committees at different levels without accepting money ranging between Tk. 5 lakh and Tk. 10 lakh.

The general secretary of the body, Sirajul Islam, was a class three employee of Janata Bank and went into retirement in

2015, but he is still using the official car. Sramik League central leader, Sultan Miah, who was also a CBA leader of the Water Development Board, amassed acres of land using power of the organisation (Sramik League).

SM Selim Ansari, another central leader of the Sramik League, was an ordinary person, but after becoming a leader of the body, he is now a millionaire.

A CBA leader of the Jiban Bima Corporation, preferring anonymity, shared this information with this correspondent yesterday (Friday). The 13th triennial council session of the Jatiya Sramik League is going to be held today (Saturday) at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital.

The first session of the council will be held at the Suhrawardy Udyan at 11am and the second at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh. Party insiders said the AL high command will make changes in the leadership of the central body of the Sramik League. Fresh faces and people with clean images will be brought in.

Besides, those involved directly or indirectly in corruption and other irregularities will be dropped from the central body at Saturday’s council session.

Sramik League leaders aspiring for different posts in the new committee have been lobbying with influential AL leaders. Some of them even tried to meet Sheikh Hasina at her official residence, while others met the party’s joint general secretary, Mahbubul Alam Hanif, who have been given the responsibility for the trade body.

According to sources at the party’s Dhanmondi office, the names of the organisation’s incumbent executive president, Fazlul Haque Montu, its vice-presidents, Habibur Rahman Akand and Jahirul Islam Chowdhury, its joint general secretary, Humayan Kabir, and general secretary of the Dhaka South unit Sramik League, Ahsan Habib Mollah, are being discussed for the top posts of the trade body.
