A head-on collision between a bus and an easy bike in Magurmari area on the Panchagarh-Tentulia Highway claimed seven lives including a newlywed bride yesterday.

Six of the deceased were identified as newlywed bride Mukti, 19, Akbar Ali, 70, his wife Nurima, 55, Makud, 45, Labu, 27, and the easy bike driver Rafiq, 28. Identity of another deceased could not be known immediately, said Special Branch (SB) officer of Panchagarh Police Abdur Razzak Mian.

Police and eyewitnesses said the Tentulia-bound bus Kazi Paribahan from Panchagarh town rammed the easy bike coming from the opposite direction in Magurmari area when the bike was taking a U-turn.

Four passengers and the easy bike driver died on the spot, said Abdur Razzak. But three other critically injured passengers were rushed to  the Panchagarh Sadar Hospital. One of them died on way to the hospital. Meanwhile, the driver of the bus fled the scene, he added. Local people, however, swooped on fire service men who went to the spot, said Panchagarh Fire Service Officer Niranjan Sarker.

They also vandalised an ambulance of Adhunik Sadar Hospital, said Medical Officer of the hospital Mansur Alam. Later, the agitating people put barricades on the highway. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel were deployed afterwards to stave off further tension.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Panchagarh Sabina Yeasmin, Police superintendent of Panchagarh Yusuf Ali and Officer-in-Charge of Sadar police station Abu Akkas reached the spot and took the situation under control after 3pm, said our district correspondent.
