Fresh, clean leaders to get berths in new committee

The 13th triennial council session of Jatiya Sramik League, a trade union body affiliated to the Awami League (AL), will be held on November 9 (tomorrow) at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital. The last council session of the trade union body was held seven years back on July 17, 2019, where Sukkur Mahmud and Sirajul Islam were made president and secretary, respectively. The Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, founded the organisation on October 11, 1969.

The first session of the council will be held at the Suhrawardy Udyan at 11am and the second at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh.

However, party insiders said the AL high command will make changes in the leadership of the central body of the Sramik League. Fresh faces and people with clean images will be brought in.

Besides, those involved directly or indirectly in corruption and other irregularities will be dropped from the central body at Saturday’s council session.

Sramik League leaders aspiring for different posts in the new committee have been lobbying with influential AL leaders.

Some of them even tried to meet Sheikh Hasina at her official residence, while others met the party’s joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, who have been given the responsibility for the trade body. Talking to this correspondent, senior AL leader Mahbubul Alam Hanif said: “It absolutely depends on the party president, Sheikh Hasina, who will be chosen for the top posts of the Sramik League.”

“But as far as I know, this time, fresh and clean-image leaders will be seen at the top posts of the body,” he added.

According to sources at the party’s Dhanmondi office, the names of the organisation’s incumbent executive president, Fazlul Haque Montu, its vice-presidents, Habibur Rahman Akand and Jahirul Islam Chowdhury, its joint general secretary, Humayan Kabir, and general secretary of the Dhaka South unit Sramik League, Ahsan Habib Mollah, are being discussed for the top posts of the trade body.

When contacted, Habibur Rahman Akand, who is also president of the Railways Sramik League, said: “AL president Sheikh Hasina knows well who are fit for the top posts of the organisation. But those who are in trade union politics should be given a chance to run the organisation. I will accept the leadership of the Sramik League, even if I am not fit for the post. But I am hopeful.”

Talking to this correspondent, another aspirant, Jahirul Islam Chowdhury, who is also president of the Biddut Sramik League, said: “I think this time the organisation chief will select new leaders for the Sramik League. Those who have performed well for the organisation as well as the party, and who were not involved in corruption will find a place in the new committee.”

Another aspirant, Ahsan Habib Mollah, said: “I have been involved in the politics of the Sramik League from the ward level. I will accept any decision taken by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. I am an aspirant for the post of general secretary in the new committee.”

Leaders of the AL and Sramik League have been working hard in line with the organisational chief Sheikh Hasina’s directives to make  Saturday’s council a success.

The 10th triennial council session of the Bangladesh Krishak League, an affiliated body of the AL, was held on Wednesday and got a new set of leaders.

Krishibid Samir Chanda was named as the new president and Umme Kulsum Smriti new secretary of the organisation.
