A woman died after a fire broke out at a residential building in the capital’s Dhanmondi area yesterday. A total of three people were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after sustaining burn injuries and suffocation in the fire and one of them succumbed at the hospital, said Abdul Latif, officer-in-charge of Dhanmondi police station. The deceased was identified as Jamila Kuti, 65. A 12-year-old girl, identified as Shaheda, and a man was also taken to the DMCH due to fire injuries, said Inspector Bacchu Miah, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost.

“The firefighters entered the flat and rescued three persons, including Shaheda. They were sent to DMCH, where the doctors declared the 65-year-old woman dead,” Bacchu Miah added. Shaheda was admitted to the hospital while the man was released from giving first aid, he said.

The fire, which originated on the third floor of the 12-storey apartment building on Dhanmondi 6/A residential area, opposite the Eidgah ground, was brought under control after about an hour’s efforts, said fire service sources.

The fire originated at 9:25am, said Mohammad Rasel Shikdar, a duty officer at the Fire Service Central Control Room.

Three firefighting units rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire around 10:20am, Rasel said.

The cause of the fire and the extent of damage could not be immediately known, Rasel added.
