District administration in separate drives from Monday night till Tuesday morning jailed nine fishermen for catching hilsa from the  Padma and the Arial Khan rivers defying a government ban and destroyed 20,000 meters current nets.

The jailed fishermen are Shahajahan, Salam, Joynal, Alal Shikder, Rashed, Abdur Sardar, Sharif Sardar, Arshad Mondol and Piar Mondol. All of them are from Dikrir Char and North-Channel union under Faridpur Sadar upazila.

Executive Magistrate Hasan Md Hafizur Rahman, said the nine fishermen were sentenced to different terms of imprisonment.

Fisheries Department officials and police members were present during the drive.

The government imposed a 22-day ban on catching, selling, storing and transporting hilsa from October 9 to 31, to ensure safe spawning of the national fish during its peak breeding period.
