GK Shamim, Khaled Mahmud sued

Shamim, mother sued for amassing Tk 297cr illegally while Khaled for pocketing Tk 5.58cr
STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
GK Shamim, Khaled Mahmud sued

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday filed two separate cases against controversial contactor SM Golam Kibria Shamim and his mother and suspended Juba League leader Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan for their allegedly accumulating wealth illegally. Among the two cases, one was filed against GK Shamim and his mother for amassing around Tk. 297 crore illegally while another case was filed against Khaled for illegally amassing some Tk. 5.58 crore. The commission’s assistant director, Salahuddin, filed the two cases separately, ACC secretary Mohammad Delwar Bakht told reporters at his office. He said GK Shamin and his mother Ayesha Akter were prosecuted for accumulating illegal wealth worth around Tk. 297 crore while the suspended Dhaka South City unit organising secretary of the Juba League, Khaled, was prosecuted for amassing illegal wealth worth some Tk. 5.58 crore.

According to the complaint, GK Shamim showed his accumulated immoveable property as being worth Tk. 40.21 crore in his income tax documents of the 2018–19 tax year though actually it was Tk. 50 crore. He also failed to show the legal source of such income of Tk. 50 crore. In the same fiscal year, he showed his moveable property to be worth Tk. 38.69 crore. Of the amount, he failed to show the legal source of Tk. 36.35 crore, the complaint said.

The commission found the total property of Shamim’s business firm GKB Company and Private Limited to be worth Tk. 43.57 crore. There, Shamim is the owner of 80 per cent of the shares and his mother Ayesha owns 20 per cent of the shares. The ACC did not find any legal source of income of Shamim’s mother, the complaint said.

The complaint against Khaled said the Juba League leader amassed wealth worth some Tk. 5.58 crore through illegal businesses, including casino operations. The commission found some business entities, including a real estate company, in Khaled’s name. On September 20, the Jubo League expelled its Dhaka South City organising secretary Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan, who was arrested for running a casino, for breaching the organisation’s discipline and for being involved in anti-social activities. On September 20, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) had arrested Shamim, 50, a top government-listed contractor and a known Jubo League leader, in connection with extortion and tender manipulation.
