Mohun Bagan to meet Laos’ Young Elephant today

Indian soccer giants Mohun Bagan FC and the Young Elephant FC of Laos will face each other in the Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup football today at M A Aziz Stadium in Chattogram. The match will kick-off at 7pm. BTV, Bangla TV and Channel-9 will telecast the match live.   

MA Aziz Stadium was adorned with colourful banner-festoon and it turned into a party area surrounding the stadium when many of young people gathered with wearing T-shirts designed with the image of late Sheikh Kamal, the great sports organiser after whom the tournament is being organised.  

The pulling out the name of the Abahani Limited, which could make the tournament more competitive and attractive, is the talk among the football fans, as there are huge supporters of Abahani Limited here in Chattogram trying to know the reason of withdrawal the name of the Sky Blue of Dhaka.     

Now Gokulam Kerela FC of India replaced Abahani Limited (Dhaka). The Indian side are due here today and they will be the eighth team to take part in the tournament.

Organisers have been working hard for last few days not to leave any shortage in their organisation when the participating teams from home and abroad expressed their happiness with the preparation and local hospitality.

However, coaches of both today’s participants - Mohun Bagan AC of India and Young Elephant FC of Laos stated their impression with their participation in the competition.  

Mohun Bagan, one of the traditional Indian giants, who have a glorious background of their winning so many trophies in their more than 100 years’ history, came here with a strong side.

Mohun Bagan coach Kibu Vicon said, “It is an international tournament, we will try to do our best to play good football, as it is also part of our preparation for our coming league, we will try to take chance to raise the trophy as every team came here, hopefully we can see good matches.”

Mohun Bagan came here with a strong side comprising with five Spanish players but their coach Vicon said he has a new team and trying to make the combination, “We are quite new team and looking forward for a competition, we are trying to adjust.”

Replying to a query Vicon said, “I will focus first on the first match and denied to identify any team as favourites among the participants – “It is difficult to say who are favourites before the tournament starts.”

Young Elephant from Laos looked the youngest most side among the all participating  teams as their coach V Salvaraj also said, “This is a young team, it is an opportunity for the players to have international exposure of club level football, as they did not play in any international club competition.”

“We are excited, all teams are good here, they have good history, we did not take part in any international tournament before this time, we will try to play good football and we are looking forward,” said Laos coach.

Laos team, who had their practice at the Police Line ground in the city, after the practice coach Salvaraj said, “There is no foreign players in the team and in the local league no players is allowed.”
