Students of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) yesterday got promise-bound to thwart criminal and communal activities on the university campus. BUET Vice-Chancellor Prof. Saiful Islam, Directorate of Students' Welfare (DSW) acting Director Prof. Mohammed Abdul Bashit and provosts of all eight halls also took the oath alongside the students.

However, teachers of the university stayed away from the oath-talking ceremony. Although the oath-taking was supposed to take place at the BUET Shaheed Minar, it was held in the auditorium because of inclement weather. During the oath, the students said no more innocent souls inside the university would get hurt anymore. They also promised to protest against any torture, discrimination and injustice on the campus while they pledged to perform their duties with sincerity and honesty.

The attendees observed a one-minute silence in memory of Abrar. The aggrieved students ended their week-long protest through the oath-taking ceremony. “Any decision regarding the expulsion of the accused students will be finalised after receiving the probe committee report,” the BUET VC told journalists after the ceremony.

The oath-taking programme came after days of protest by the BUET students demanding justice for Abrar, 21, a student of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) department who was brutally tortured to death, allegedly by a group of BCL men, in Sher-E-Bangla Hall on October 7 over his suspected link with Islami Chhatra Shibir.

Meanwhile, ASM Nazmus Sadat, yet another accused in the Abrar murder case, was placed on a five-day remand yesterday. Metropolitan Magistrate Morshed Al Mamun Bhuiyan passed the remand order after Md Wahiduzzaman, an inspector of the Detective Branch (DB) of police and also the investigation officer of the case, produced him before the court with a 10-day remand prayer. Detectives arrested Nazmus Sadat from Dinajpur early Tuesday while he was trying to cross the border to India. He is a 17th batch student of Mechanical Engineering department of the university. The police have so far arrested 20 people over the murder that sparked protests across the country.

Earlier, the students were demanding justice for the murder of Abrar. They, however, halted their protests for the 2020-2021 admission test. Their five major demands were accepted by the BUET administration. Meanwhile, Law Minister Anisul Huq yesterday said a special prosecution team would deal with the trial proceedings of the murder of Abrar.

“The preparation to form the special prosecution team is underway to take charge of the Abrar murder case. It won’t be fair to say anything about the case before completion of the investigation,” the minister said. He was talking to reporters after a meeting with a European Union delegation at his office in the Secretariat yesterday. Anisul Huq said the Abrar murder case started with the first information report (FIR). The investigation is currently going on.

Citing the home minister’s comment, Huq said the charge-sheet would be submitted within a few days. “We’ll take the next step once we receive the charge-sheet. The law ministry is going to set up a special prosecution team to deal with the case so that the matter gets completed within a short time,” he added.

On October 10, the law minister had said all necessary measures would be taken for a speedy disposal of the murder case. “Everyone involved in the murder, regardless of their affiliations, will be brought to book. The trial will be completed to ensure justice,” he had added.

On October 14, family members of Abrar met with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence in Dhaka. Hasina assured them that she had already directed the law minister to quickly dispose of the murder case.

Abrar was beaten to death inside his hall in the wee hours on October 7. The police recovered his body from between the ground floor and the second floor of the Hall at 3am on the day. Abrar’s father, Barkat Ullah, filed a case against 19 people with the Chawkbazar police station in connection with the murder of his son.
