Bangladesh has achieved self-sufficiency in granular crops, vegetables, fish and meat production due to adoption of agriculture-friendly policies and activities. The country is currently placed fourth in paddy production, third in vegetables production, eighth in potato production and seventh in mango production in the world.

Food minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder came up with this while addressing a seminar to mark World Food Day in the city’s Krishibid Institution yesterday. State minister for fisheries and livestock Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru, lawmaker Abdul Mannan, FAO Bangladesh representative Robert D Simpson, Dhaka University professor Nazma Shahin, ICDDRB senior director Dr Tahmid Ahmed and several scientists also spoke on the occasion.

Thailand’s Institute of Nutrition of Mahidol University director Prof Visith Chavasit presented the keynote paper at the seminar. “The main objective of Work Food Day is to create awareness against hunger, malnutrition and poverty. The present government is relentlessly working to build Bangladesh a poverty-free country,” Sadhan Chandra Majumder said.

The Awami League (AL)-led government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has taken various initiatives to increase the agricultural production by introducing incentives among farmers, the food minister noted. He said the agriculture-friendly government has introduced modern technology in the agricultural sector to help farmers.

“The government is giving 30kg of rice per family at Tk. 10 a kg for five months every year. This programme was introduced since 2016 as per the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. A total of 50 lakh people below the poverty line have been brought under this programme across the country,” he added. He also it is one of the largest social safety net programmes for the poor people in Bangladesh.

Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru said many people, including students and unemployed  youth, are involved in fish, chicken and cattle farms in rural areas. “We have already achieved self-sufficiency in vegetables, fish and meat production. It has been possible due to the time- befitting activities of the present government,” the state minister added.

Later, the minister, along with the attended guests, inaugurated a three-day long food fair on the premises of Krishibid Institution.

A total of 46 organisations from both public and private sectors are taking part at the food fair, which will remain open from 9am to 8pm.
