UEFA Assist U-16 soccer kicks off today

UEFA Assist Under-16 Development Tournament 2019 Bangladesh, will kick- off today at the Bangabandhu National Stadium. Two matches will take place in the opening day. Bangladesh will face Cambodia, while Faroe Islands will tale on Maldives in the two matches.

Four teams, one from Europe and three from Asia including Bangladesh are taking part in the tournament under the ‘UEFA Mini Tournament Project’ with the assistance by the UEFA in association with the AFC.

Besides Bangladesh, Maldives and Cambodia are the other two Asian teams, while Faroe Islands is the lone team from Europe.

In a press meet yesterday at the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) Bhaban, all the coaches gave importance to the youth football development when Bangladesh coach Robert Martin said that it would be great opportunity for the Bangladesh boys to have experience playing with the teams from Asia and a  team from Europe.

Robert said, "Development of Youth football is very important, it is the foundation to represent the national team in future.”

“Usually Bangladesh have no opportunity to play any European team, playing against the Faroe Island, the team from Europe a great footballing nation is big opportunity,” Robert said replying to a query. “Boys have been working extremely hard for last few days, I hope they will do well.”

Maldives coach Mohammed Nizam said that he was involved with a new project for four years of Maldives football and he took the charge only two month ago.” Nizam informed that now in Maldives it is mandatory for all clubs to have age group teams and most of the clubs have academy to produce footballers.

“Maldives Football Federation is giving importance to youth football, this team played in AFC and SAFF age group football and an invitational tournament in Qatar and will try to do well in this competition,” said Nizam, who was the coach of TC Sports Club of Maldives during their winning the Sheikh Kamal Club Cup football tournament.

Coach of Faroe Island Aki Johansen said that the temperature will be a big challenge for them when they came from only six degree Celsius, “We are from only six degree temperature, it would be a great challenge for the boys.”

“Boys have international experiences from Under-15, they are the new generation, it is a development process for future, youth football is very important, we have only 50,000 people in our country said Aki Johansen.

Cambodia coach Inou Kazunori of Japan said that they are very excited to have the opportunity to play in the competition, though they did not do good result in the AFC Under-16 competition.
