No illegal DTH connection after Dec 15, says minister

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
No illegal DTH connection after Dec 15, says minister

Information minister Hasan Mahmud said many foreign companies are showing foreign channels through direct-to-home (DTH) downlink service without the government’s approval and this will not be allowed to continue.

“Since the introduction of the DTH service, Tk. 700-800 crore is being siphoned off to foreign countries through hundi, which is harmful for Bangladesh. We have taken steps to bring discipline in the broadcasting sector of the country. Previously, I had managed to stop foreign advertisements on Bangladeshi channels,” the minister said

Speaking at a meeting last Wednesday (October 9) with leaders of the Federation of Television Professionals Organisation (FTPO) at the Secretariat, the minister said

the government will take punitive measures against dishonest distributors who will not remove the DTH by the government's stipulated date of December 15.

The information minister said: "This (reception of satellite programmes with a personal dish) is illegal as the government has not given any approval to use it. The DTH equipment are imported and distributors take money for one year from subscribers and they send the money abroad through illegal means."

State minister for information, Dr Murad Hasan, information secretary Abdul Malek and FTPO convener and eminent cultural personality Mamunur Rashid, among others, were present.

Mamunur Rashid said some foreign TV serials appeared to be a curse and were causing social decay in the country. He urged the government to form a preview committee to take approval to run the foreign TV serials dubbed in Bangla.

The minister said some television channels are airing foreign TV serials dubbed in Bangla, which is not acceptable.

"So, the ministry has issued an order for TV channels to seek approval to broadcast the dubbing serials. A preview committee will also be formed soon to oversee the matter," he added.

He said the government has taken steps to bring discipline in the electronic media in the last six months. "We have taken initiatives for the betterment of the mass media. These initiatives will put the media in order mostly," he added.

According to the minister, government’s permission will be required to dub any foreign movie in Bangla. A preview committee will be set up to ensure this directive is implemented.
