Casino king Samrat taken back to jail

Councillor Mizan put on 7-day remand
STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
Casino king Samrat taken back to jail

Casino kingpin Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat was taken back to the Keraniganj prison, after he was released from the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) yesterday. A Dhaka court placed Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) ward councillor of Mohammadpur, Habibur Rahman Mizan, on a seven-day remand in a money-laundering case filed against him with Mohammadpur police station.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) filed the case yesterday against Mizan under the Money Laundering Act with Mohammadpur police, while the other case has been filed by the elite police unit under the firearms law with the police in Moulvibazar’s Sreemangal, RAB (legal and media wing) Senior Assistant Director, Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan, said.

On the other hand, the expelled Juba League president (Dhaka South) Samrat was taken to the central prison at around 11.20 in the morning.

“He will be treated like other general prisoners,” said

Iqbal Kabir Chowdhury, senior jail superintendent of the Keraniganj jail.

The NICVD medical board, which was set up for Samrat's treatment, released Samrat as he is now in a stable condition, said a hospital source.

“Samrat had gone through several tests for the last four days and the results were positive,” said Dr Samir Kumar Kundu, deputy director and associate professor of the NICVD.

The authorities of Keraniganj Central Jail took Samrat to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on October 8 after he

complained of chest pain. Later, he was moved to the NICVD. A seven-member medical board, headed by the director, was formed for his treatment.

Samrat had undergone a heart valve replacement surgery around 15 years ago, say NICVD doctors.

On October 6, RAB arrested Samrat and his close aide, Enamul Haque Arman, also expelled vice-president of the Jubo League Dhaka South, from Cumilla.

A mobile court sentenced Samrat to six months’ imprisonment under the Wildlife Conservation Act after RAB seized two kangaroo hides from his office in the capital’s Kakrail.

RAB filed two cases with Ramna police station against him under the arms and narcotics control acts last Monday.

In councillor Mizan’s case, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nivana Khayer Jessy placed Mizan on seven days’ remand  after investigation officer and CID inspector, Giasuddin, produced him before the court and pleaded for a 10-day remand.

The councillor of ward 32 was arrested by RAB early on Saturady from Sreemangal in Moulvibazar.

RAB sources said the accused had amassed huge wealth through illegal activities, including the running of casinos in the city.

He was trying to flee the country amid the ongoing anti-graft raids.

Later, members of RAB raided his Lalmatia office and Mohammadpur residence.

They found nothing at the Lalmatia office, but unearthed cheques of different bank accounts worth Tk. 6 crore 77 lakhs, fixed deposit receipt (FDR) for Tk. 1 crore, around Tk. 2 lakh in cash, and a pistol with four bullets at his home.

It was also found out that the councillor owns two houses, one in Texas, USA, and the other in Australia.

Mohammadpur police OC Ganesh Gopal Biswas said: “RAB has filed a case (No. 31) under the Money Laundering Act against councillor Mizan.”

The case in Sreemangal was started by the local RAB-9 camp’s Senior Warrant Officer Abdul Jabbar.
