Drive soon to evict illegal vehicles, rickshaws

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon yesterday announced that illegal vehicles and rickshaws will not be allowed to ply the roads of the capital. And drive will be conducted in this regards soon.

City Corporation authorities along with Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP’s) Traffic department will also conduct another drive to free footpaths in Gulistan, Motijheel and New Market areas from illegal grabbing.

Khokon made the statement in a press briefing after attending a meeting of Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA)  committee on illegal vehicles, at the Nagar Bhaban.

“We have taken four decisions, which include barring hawkers from occupying footpaths during working hours under city corporation areas, eviction of illegal rickshaws and other such vehicles from the city, Rajuk mobile court drives to evict illegal establishments of footpaths and walkways, and marking approved parking zones and evicting illegal parking in the city,” the mayor said.

“We have set a target and urge all citizens for come forward to put an end to traffic deadlocks and hindrances on the roads,” he added.

DSCC authorities have been conducting drives against city hawkers, however, the footpaths soon become occupied as soon as the drives end.

In Dhaka’s Gulistan, Paltan, Dainik Bangla intersection, Baitul Mukarram and several other areas, hawkers continue their businesses on footpaths and on rickshaw vans loaded with their merchandises,

disrupting movement of both pedestrians and vehicles.

“Very interestingly, these hawkers quickly leave the areas with their goods sensing presence of police or city corporation officials. Later, they resume their positions on the footpath again as usual,” DMP commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam told the meeting.

The DSCC mayor thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the ongoing crackdown on illegal casinos and gambling dens in the country.

Following a question regarding the involvement of a councilor with the illegal casino business, the mayor said: “The law will take its own course. Law is equal for all. We have sent a letter to the local government about his activities so that he could not leave the country.”

In June, the government formed a committee to identify and remove illegal vehicles from streets in the capital, and reclaim footpaths. DSCC Mayor Khokon was made the chief coordinator of the committee, while Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam is its member.

Dhaka South and North City Corporation, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, and Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) will jointly work in this regard.

Police Commissioner of DMP Md Shafiqul Islam and Chairman of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Masud Alam were present among others in the meeting.
