ACC launches probe

Issuance of NID cards to Rohingyas
STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
ACC launches probe

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday started a probe into a case of issuing national identity (NID) cards to Rohingyas in Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar. The commission took the decision at a meeting, presided over by its chairman Iqbal Mohmood, held at its head office in Dhaka, ACC public relations officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharjee told reporters yesterday. “The commission took the decision following a recent incident of NID forgery. If anyone is found guilty in this regard, the commission will file cases against them,” he said. The commission primarily started the probe against seven employees of the Election Commission (EC), including two officers, in this connection.

Earlier this month, police and passport officials said some Rohingya refugees were making Bangladeshi passports using forged NID cards with the help of some locals and Rohingya brokers. The Rohingyas were using fake names and addresses while applying for the identification documents.

Recently, a government probe body found that at least 73 suspicious applications were uploaded to the EC database for the issuing of NID cards.

Earlier, on September 17, the EC in Chattogram had filed a case against five people, including an official of the Chattogram regional election office, for their alleged involvement in providing NID and smart cards to Rohingyas.

Pallabi Chakma, election officer of Double Mooring thana, filed the case with Kotwali police station under the Digital Security Act and the Election Commission Act.

On September 16, law enforcers arrested three people,

including the election official from the election office. They were Joynal Abedin, 35, office assistant of the Double Mooring election office, Bijoy Das, 26, a driver by profession, and Sheema Das alias Sumaiya Akter, 24, an employee of the Chattogram Government General Hospital.

According to sources at the EC, the ACC has found that false NID and smart cards were prepared for Rohingyas using an EC laptop that had gone missing from its Chattogram office. But the ACC could not confirm whether the laptop had been stolen or handed over to someone by election officials.

A total of 51 Rohingyas have so far been detected to have been included in the voter list.

The voter ID cards were prepared in 14 thana election offices in six districts with 74 registration forms.

Bangladesh is now hosting over 1.1 million Rohingyas. More than 730,000 Rohingya fled to Bangladesh after the Myanmar military launched a brutal offensive targeting the mainly-Muslim ethnic minority on August 25, 2017.
