No place for corrupt leaders in AL central committee

Abu Jakir, Dhaka
No place for corrupt leaders in AL central committee

The AL chief has directed intelligence agencies and her party’s senior leaders to gather information about such leaders, party insiders said.

Moreover, the AL high-ups have started a drive against corrupt and rude leaders and activists in the party and its associate organisations.

However, party sources said the drive will continue until "these disturbing elements" are rooted out from the party.

The decision became clear on September 14 when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina dropped Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) president Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and general secretary Golam Rabbani from their respective posts because of their involvement in corruption and various irregularities.

Hasina took the decision at a meeting of the Awami League Central Working Committee (ALCWC) held at her official residence on that day. She also decided to take action against party leaders and workers involved in corruption or other irregularities.

Following the decision, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Wednesday arrested Juba League's Dhaka South organising secretary, Khalid Mahmud Bhuiyan, for running a “casino business” in the Fakirerpool area of the capital. Juba League central committee leader, SM Golam Kibria Shamim, was arrested yesterday (Friday).

Talking to this correspondent, AL joint general secretary, Mahbubul Alam Hanif, said the drive against corrupt and rude leaders has started across the country. Those who will be found guilty, will have to face the music, he added.

“There is no question of inducting corrupt leaders in the party’s central body in the coming national council session, however big they may be,” he said in reply to a question.

“Also, you know we have already issued show-cause notices to the party’s rebel leaders who violated party decision in the recently held local body elections. So, there will be no room for corrupt and rude leaders in the Awami League and its associate bodies,” he

said. The party has so far issued show-cause notices to 160 local leaders for contesting against party nominated candidates in the latest local government elections. The party has also decided to take action against party lawmakers and ministers who had backed the party’s rebel leaders.

Speaking to The Independent, AL central committee member Iqbal Hossain Apu said: “As far as I know, this time our party chief will induct dedicated leaders with a clean image in the central working committee. There is no doubt about that.”

“And those who tarnish the party’s image and the government’s achievements will have no place in the party. Our party chief is strict about  her decision. No one involved in irregularities will be spared,” he said.

Addressing a press conference, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader said the drive against corruption and irregularities will continue across the country.

“Drives will be conducted where there are irregularities and grafts. It’s not only about Jubo League and Chhatra League, those who will be found involved in corruption in the Awami League, will have to face the same fate,” he said.

He was speaking to the media at the party president Shiekh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office.

Party insiders also said Sheikh Hasina would make major changes in the party’s central body as no major changes were introduced in the last three councils.

The Awami League held its 20th national council session at Suhrawardi Udyan in the city on October 22-23, 2016.

As the party is in power for the third consecutive term, it is working on holding a colourful, prestigious and unprecedented council session. The party has already formed twelve sub-committees to make the council session a grand success.
